JOB SUMMARY

This position performs semi-skilled and manual work in the performance of laboring tasks and a variety of construction and maintenance work in parks, streets, recreation areas and facilities.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs a wide range of manual laboring tasks as assigned, including making repairs to streets (with asphalt or limerock), storm pipes, manholes, inlets and sidewalks, landscaping, refuse collection, and general maintenance.
  • Removes and installs concrete.
  • Replaces or installs road signs.
  • Clears trees, brush, and vegetation from roadside.
  • Maintains grounds. 
  • Mows grass, rakes and picks up leaves, trash and debris, pulls weeds, digs up plants, shrubs, and trees and replants in other locations, lays sod, trims hedges, and spreads fertilizer.
  • Digs, hoes, and shovels dirt, sand, clay, and other materials.
  • Cleans restrooms, pool, and pier and sweeps patios and other areas.
  • Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Cleans ditches and culverts.
  • Inspects and maintains equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Class "E" Florida Drivers License and compliance with vehicle use policy requirements, Section 8.15(c) in the City's Personnel Manual.

Special Requirements: 

  • This position is designated as a safety sensitive position.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of tools used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of safe working procedures.
  • Ability to learn methods of operating and maintaining equipment and tools.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, sometimes during adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and lawn care power equipment.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

                                                             PHYSICAL DEMANDS                                                             

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Also requires the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions with dust, vibrations, fumes, and noise, at heights up to 15 feet, and below ground level.
