Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is hiring a Senior Utility Systems Maintenance Technician for SPU’s Utility Operations & Maintenance Division. In this role, you will lead staff and perform the more complex tasks related to inspecting, maintaining, and repairing critical system parts and components including valves, actuators, pumps and motors, piping, zone critical set points and pressures, flow irregularities and various facilities equipment within critical systems and related zones.

The Utility Operations & Maintenance Division provides core services to the three main lines of SPU business, Transmission, Distribution and Operations We are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the primary drinking water and treatment for various facilities to include pump stations, reservoirs, dams and various types of regulating and control type valves.

Position Duties

  • Perform mechanical work on water systems
  • Install, maintain, and repair pressure regulating and control valves, various sizes of electronic and motor operated isolation valves and piston controlled hydraulic ball valve actuators
  • Install, maintain, and repair double suction as well as vertical turbine pumps of various sizes and flow rates
  • Manage work orders and maintain the labor and equipment hours through our CMMS
  • Establish and Maintain zone pressures for critical system infrastructure to protect from over pressurization
  • Respond to system emergencies, troubleshoot valve/pump pressure and flow irregularities
  • Perform fabrication as needed such as drilling, cutting and welding to conform to specifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Two (2) years of experience working on utility mechanical systems such as pump stations, OR 
  • One (1) year of college/trade school training with a concentration in a mechanical discipline and two (2) years experience in water and wastewater or other utility service in the repair of hydraulic and electric pumps, motors, or similar devices (combinations of training or experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of pressure regulating and control type valves
  • Working knowledge of electronic and motor operated control type valves
  • General knowledge of all components of a water system and pump stations
  • Experience in lifting and rigging procedures
  • Ability to fabricate within the mechanical disciplines
  • Ability to work in close confined space and fall protection as necessary
  • Experience in other safety related procedures
  • Experience utilizing a CMMS
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • This is an onsite position initially reporting to the Operations Control Center in Seattle, WA. At a later time, it will be transferred to the Tolt Treatment Plant in Duvall, WA.
  • Employees will be required to come into the office five days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather and site conditions including rotating machinery, high voltage, high water pressure, Traffic hazards, slippery areas, heavy construction equipment operation, confined spaces, and toxic gases.
  • Willingness to work extended shifts, nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and be on-call 24/7 for emergencies.

 

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • Valid Washington driver's license prior to commitment of employment
  • Confined Space, Fall Protection, Traffic Control and Forklift Certifications are required within one (1) year of employment.

The full salary range for this position is: $46.35 - $50.02 per hour.
