About the Department
Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Mid-Management/Supervisory Bargaining Unit for labor relations purposes.
Position Duties
- Exercise sound and impartial judgment in all phases of casework and public contact
- Supervise staff of Child Support Specialists and clerical support staff
- Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, training, assigning, evaluating, and disciplinary action under the direction of immediate manager
- Apply Federal and State laws and regulations to each case as appropriate
- Interview custodial parents and defendants to initiate case files
- Gather factual information on all parties concerned regarding child, spousal, and medical support obligations
- Advise the appropriate party on legal rights and processes
- Conduct preliminary investigations to establish pertinent facts and determine appropriate actions for enforcement, locate, and establishment
- Ensure case file is properly maintained, and correspondence is dealt with in a timely manner
- Maintain a reduced caseload of the more complex cases to include restricted handling cases
- Assist in the training of fellow Child Support Specialists and monitor the quality of their work
- Answer questions and provide assistance to fellow Child Support Specialists
- Assist in the gathering of statistical data for local, State, and Federal reports
- Communicate effectively with the general public, attorneys, governmental agencies, and employees
- Locate a child's parents for the purpose of establishing child support and/or paternity
- Establish and enforce a court order to pay child support
- Collect child and spousal support payments
- Establish or continue medical support

- One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to the Child Support Specialist II classification; OR
- Currently employed full-time for a minimum of one (1) year in the Child Support Supervisor classification in another public agency (or equivalent).
In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening will focus on the following desirable qualifications. Please list any of these qualifications you may have within the "Duties" section of the online application.
- Two (2) years of experience performing duties as a Child Support Specialist II; OR
- Two (2) years of experience performing duties as a Child Support Supervisor in another public agency; OR
- One (1) year experience of training others in any capacity
Other Qualifications
- Application Review and Screening. Applications are carefully screened based on the information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on.
- Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
- Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
- Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months but may be extended up to eighteen months.

The final appointment will be conditional upon successfully passing a County paid pre-employment drug screening (if applicable for the position) and a job-related background investigation.
