About This Opportunity

The City of Hillsboro Water Department has multiple opportunities for Water Distribution Operators. We have two (2) available positions in our Distribution Maintenance Services Section, a one (1 opportunity available in our Valve & Hydrant SectionThe Hillsboro Water Department operates at a metropolitan scale from a suburban environment, with responsibilities for local water distribution and regional water supply. This is an excellent opportunity to support the City and play a key role in providing the vital resource of clean drinking water to our diverse and thriving community.


Distribution Maintenance Services Section (2 openings)

About the Section
The Distribution Maintenance Services Section manages both planned and unplanned water main and service repairs, as well as replacements and new installations. The team also uses the City’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), performs leak detection and investigations, and provides responsive customer service. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Hillsboro Water’s mission of delivering safe, high-quality drinking water to our community.

Water Distribution Operator - Service Crew 

As a team member of the Distribution Maintenance Services Section, you will be responsible for the operation and upkeep of Hillsboro’s drinking water distribution and conveyance systems, ensuring safe, reliable service for our community.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Repairing and replacing water mains and service lines

  • Installing new mains and services to support system growth

  • Maintaining accurate asset data in the CMMS

  • Conducting leak detection and investigations

  • Supporting customer service needs related to water distribution


Water Distribution Operator - Leak Survey ( 1 FTE)
As a member of our Leak Survey Team in our Distribution Maintenance Services Section this individual will play a vital role in maintaining and improving the City’s drinking water distribution and conveyance systems, ensuring safe, reliable water delivery to the community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who values teamwork, problem-solving, and contributing to a program that protects resources and serves the community.


Key Focus Areas
This position will be directly involved in Hillsboro Water’s Water Loss Control Program as a member of our Leak Survey TeamIn addition to the Key Focus Areas above , this position will be responsible forKe

  • Conducting leak detection and investigations as part of water loss prevention efforts.

  • Performing proactive system repairs and replacements to maintain system integrity.

  • Identifying and addressing leaks promptly to minimize water loss.

  • Investigating and resolving system deficiencies and customer complaints related to water distribution.





Valves & Hydrants Section ( 1 Opening)

Water Distribution Operator - Valves & Hydrants

This individual will play an important role imaintaining the City’s valves and hydrants, ensuring system reliability, water quality, and fire protection for the community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who values essential fieldwork, teamwork, and ensuring reliable water service to the community. This work is critical to system performance and public safety. 


Key Focus Areas

  • Performing valve and hydrant maintenance, exercising, and operation.

  • Completing valve repairs and rehabilitation work.

  • Participating in loop and unidirectional system flushing.

  • Responding to flushing requests to address water quality concerns.

  • Pressure and flow testing



In addition to specific key focus areas duties Water Distribition Operators responsibilities may include:


Computerized Maintenance Management

  • Maintain the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for efficient tracking and management of assets.

  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date records of maintenance activities, repairs, and replacements.


Customer Service and Plan Review

  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing questions, concerns, and complaints from the public and our customers.

  • Supply requested information and take appropriate measures to resolve issues effectively.

  • Collaborate in plan reviews for new installations and modifications within the water distribution system.


Water Analysis and Record Keeping

  • Conduct water analyses to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Maintain comprehensive records of water distribution activities, ensuring documentation accuracy.



Oregon Water Certification

Pay level is dependent on education, certifications, and experience. Please see Training and Experience section below for requirements. The following salary ranges reflect annual earnings based on a 40-hour work week. Employees on night shift schedules will receive a?5% pay differential in addition to base bay.?Click on the links below for full job classification descriptions

Current Upcoming Projects

  • Hillsboro is a partner in Willamette Water Supply, a regional water system which is slated to come online in 2026.

  • Hillsboro Operations is operating a unidirectional flushing program in preparation for integrating Willamette Water Supply with our system.

  • Lead and Copper Rule Revision Compliance.

  • Implementing the Asset Management Program.

  • Interim assignment to water utility locating.


Acceptable Experience and Training

Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, water, wastewater technology, or related field or
2 years of experience as a Water Distribution Operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in utility maintenance/construction sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.


Licensing/Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.

  • Oregon Water Distribution Operator I- IV Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.

  • FEMA/ICS 100, 200, 700

  • Traffic Control Certification

  • OSHA Competent Person Certification

  • Trimet Track Access

  • Forklift Certification

  • First Aid/AED Certified

  • On Call Scheduled Rotation is a requirement for this position

  • This position requires you to be able to lift 90 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations.
