About the Department

The IUM (Ili Uusim Mahtawa'apo - Pascua Yaqui Head Start) Cook assists the Food Services Supervisor meet program objectives, assists in educational activities for children, parents, and staff involving nutrition education. The incumbent assists with ordering supplies; may assist with planning menus; perform inventory; may prepare supply usage logs and assist with planning nutrition activities.

Position Duties

  1. Prepare and cook foods, which may include, pan frozen food, cup fruit, wash and bag fruits/vegetables, bake foods, chop salad items, monitor food temperatures, prepare sandwiches, remove hot items from ovens, and/or perform other related activities.
  2. Maintain records pertaining to food service operation such as daily meal count and receipts of purchase.
  3. Serve and replenish food supply.
  4. Clean cafeteria and/or kitchen areas, which includes: wiping down tables, place trays in the proper location, pick up trash, sweep and mop floors, load dishwashers clean refrigerators and freezers, clean ovens, put garbage cans in proper locations, sanitize and clean towels, put up benches and/or perform other related duties.
  5. Assist in maintaining the safety and sanitation of food preparation areas; follow procedures for storing food, supplies, and equipment.
  6. Assist with monitoring food inventory and placing food and non-food inventory orders.
  7. Assist in preparing and maintaining a variety of paperwork including meal count sheets, vendor invoices, and/or printing menus.
  8. Attend staff meetings.
  9. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Food safety and sanitation standards;
  • USDA rules and regulations;
  • Nutritional standards pertaining to children;
  • Customer service principles;
  • Applicable cooking and food preparation equipment;
  • Basic inventory principles;
  • Basic food preparation and cooking techniques;
  • Cleaning and sanitizing methods;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Provide customer service;
  • Prepare and cook food;
  • Operate applicable equipment;
  • Monitor inventory;
  • Read and follow recipe directions;
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen areas;
  • Handle food;
  • Read food thermometers;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years of food service experience; and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

AND
  • Experience in a school or institutional setting preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • Food Handlers Card; 
  • TB Clearance Card; 
  • CPR and First Aid Certification; 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
