About the Department


  • Serves as the first-line supervisor of all crime scene technicians in the processing of major crime scenes and other crime scenes, as directed. 

  • Collect evidence to include physical, trace, and latent fingerprints. 

  • Photograph and prepare diagrams of crime scenes to preserve and document evidence. 

  • Record crime scenes and accident scenes to preserve and document evidence. 

  • Prepare a variety of reports of all crime scene procedures. 

  • Process evidence for latent prints by examining the item, chemically treating the item, 

  • photographing latent prints and preparing a report. 

  • Submit latent prints to AFIS. 

  • Maintain files of latent prints recovered. 

  • Prepare various reports and presentations for court. 

  • Attend autopsies to photograph and document injuries to collect, preserve and document evidence as needed. 

  • Testify in court about evidence processed and collected. 

  • Performs all other first-line supervisor duties, as required or assigned. 


Position Duties

  • Knowledge of standard policies, procedures, programs, and services in an office setting. 

  • Knowledge of state laws, practices, and procedures relating to Sheriff’s Offices and the handling of evidence. 

  • Knowledge of photographic and identification techniques used in law enforcement; fingerprint collection; and computer use and techniques.  

  • Understanding of trace evidence and blood, bodily fluid, and DNA collection techniques. 

  • Ability to pass the Georgia Crime Information Center certification test. Ability to learn court procedures. 

  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive material. 

  • Knowledge of modern office practices, equipment, methods, and procedures. 

  • Knowledge of personal computers and computer software applications. 

  • Ability to understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions. 

  • Skill in managing competing priorities on multiple projects and ability to meet deadlines. 

  • Skill in operation of issued equipment and motor vehicle.  

  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with employees and the general public.  

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing. 

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, and local, state, and federal agencies. 

  • Ability to manage high-stress situations. 

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.? Associate, Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Law Enforcement or related field is preferred. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two year. Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act. Certified Peace Officer through Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in good standing. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.   Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Peace Officer; investigator/detective in a law enforcement environment experience preferred. Ability to obtain the Georgia POST Crime Scene Technician certification within one year; or hold a Crime Scene Technician certification through Georgia POST preferred.

Other Qualifications

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 25 lbs.) and distinguishing shades of color.
