POSITION TITLE:  Facilities Assistant 

DEPARTMENT:  Facilities   GRADE: 2 FLSA: Non-Exempt   

FTE:  .75 with the intent of becoming 1.0

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position provides essential janitorial, hosting, and basic maintenance services to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff and visitors. The role requires routine cleaning, event support, basic repairs, and upkeep of building systems and spaces. Work is performed independently and under the direction of the Facilities Manager.

This position is ¾-time (30-39 hours/week) with the intent of eventually becoming Full-time (40 hours/week) .

  

This position will rotate between Mesa County Libraries locations and requires a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Wage range: $15.50-18.23 per hour, depending on experience


Benefits:  

This 3/4--time position includes a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and supplemental insurance coverages as well as HRA and retirement savings. Benefits include vacation and sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Check restrooms frequently and respond promptly to service calls (e.g., messes, clogs).
  • Refill restroom dispensers (paper towels, soap, toilet tissue, sanitary products).
  • Spot vacuum carpets, stairs, and elevator as needed.
  • Respond to spills, stains, bodily fluids, broken furniture, odors, and other custodial issues throughout campus.
  • Wipe down tables and common area furniture regularly.
  • Dust shelves, displays, windowsills, and public-facing surfaces.
  • Sweep and mop non-carpeted areas as needed.
  • Clean interior glass and smudged windows.
  • Empty and sanitize trash and recycling bins.
  • Maintain cleanliness of outdoor patios, including furniture and trash collection.
  • Clean and restock the staff break room; handle light kitchen duties such as dishwashing, microwave cleaning, and refrigerator      maintenance.
  • Assist with or independently complete basic facility maintenance work orders.
  • Attend to urgent custodial or maintenance issues as they arise.

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Water and repot indoor plants in public and shared areas.
  • Perform high dusting and remove cobwebs (indoors and outdoors).
  • Deep clean lower-traffic or secondary areas on a rotating schedule.

As Needed / Periodic Tasks:

  • Assist with room setups and breakdowns for meetings,  classes, and special events.
  • Provide support for event scheduling and logistics  when requested.
  • Clean community and conference rooms before/after use.
  • Clean exterior windows and blinds.
  • Replace air fresheners and maintain dispenser functionality.
  • Organize janitorial closets, supply rooms, and storage areas.
  • Wash and maintain janitorial rags, mop heads, and other reusable supplies.
  • Replenish cleaning and hospitality supplies in shared areas and departments.
  • Wash walls, clean equipment, and use ladders when required.
  • Move furniture, tools, and supplies as needed.
  • Perform light maintenance duties, including:
    • Changing light bulbs and batteries
    • Adjusting door closers
    • Minor painting and touch-ups
    • Monitoring HVAC and lighting systems for issues
    • Assembling shelves, carts, or furniture
  • Assist Security staff by reporting safety or behavioral concerns.
  • Support seasonal maintenance tasks such as light weeding or snow shoveling.
  • Support Finance in performing annual inventory of items and equipment.

Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and update supply order lists for janitorial, breakroom, and pantry supplies.
  • Sort, box, palletize, and prepare decommissioned materials (e.g., withdrawn books) for shipment.
  • Safely operate vehicles, hand tools, and power equipment.
  • Use and maintain equipment per instructions and safety standards.
  • Stay informed on facility changes, safety procedures, and updates through internal communications.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  1. Self-development and Expertise: Attend monthly staff meetings and training; attend external trainings and conferences, stay aware of activities via staff wiki, email and regular communication with colleagues. 
  2. Performs other duties as assigned or requested

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of custodial procedures and materials

Basic knowledge of facility maintenance and repair

Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor fixes independently

Skill in operating cleaning and light maintenance equipment

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and to transport self to other library locations in a timely fashion


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to walk the building regularly and move quickly when necessary

Bend, lift (up to 25 lbs), reach, and tolerate exposure to cleaning agents

Visual acuity to read small print and identify maintenance issues

Tolerance for dust and allergens 


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to chemical cleaning products (with proper PPE and training)

Variable weather conditions (including outdoor tasks)

Frequent interruptions and shifting priorities

Travel between library locations  


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Must be 20 years of age or older, for car insurance purposes

One year of janitorial, facilities, or hospitality experience preferred


SCHEDULE: 

Occasional evening or weekend shifts may be required for events or coverage needs

30-minute unpaid meal break for each shift that are five or more hours

Flexibility is expected and reciprocated as needed
