As an Eden Alternative home that is highly committed to enhancing the lives of our residents, we are seeking an energetic individual to serve as our Director of Nursing. Join our team and direct the quality of care for our committed team of nurses and CNAs. This position oversees all clinical care needed to meet the resident's needs, ensuring high-quality and compliant patient care, and frequent rounding with the team and residents. The DON is responsible for managing the nursing department budget.  Over the course of these duties, it is imperative that working relations among internal departments and external partners are well managed. 

Primary Job Purpose:  Designated by the Administration to have the authority, responsibility, and accountability for the functions, activities, and training of the Nursing team.  Develops and maintains nursing service objectives, executes neighbor care policies, maintains standards of nursing practice and departmental fiscal responsibility, and ensures adequate staffing and training for the nursing team while directing the ongoing quality improvement programs.

Essential Job Functions:

Neighbor Care

  • Practice the Values, the Mission, and Philosophy of Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center.
  • Determines type and amount of nursing care needed to meet the neighbors needs prior to admission and is involved in any critical decisions involving neighbor care and monitors the admission process.
  • Performs daily rounds and reviews nursing reports to keep current with neighbor care and needs. (Evaluates neighbor needs and correlates care by scheduling daily rounds, reviewing nursing reports & medical records, visiting neighbors, and observing care).  
  • Assigns responsibility and delegates’ authority for neighbor care.
  • Continually upgrades the care given through education and maintenance of good communication between neighbors and staff.
  • Participates in discharge planning.  Ensures that physician orders are obtained for discharge and prepares neighbor discharge instructions.
  • Cooperates with all departments to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Manages nursing department budget and reviews monthly departmental financials with NHA and submits variance reports.
  • Reviews potential admissions as part of the admissions team

Personnel

  • Sets standards for qualifications of personnel while following regulations regarding licensed personnel.
  • Responsible for hiring adequate nursing staff.
  • Initiates special focus groups and committees, as necessary to address neighbor care needs.
  • Terminates staff when indicated, consulting with Human Resources or Administrator if necessary.
  • Supervises orientation of new personnel with coaching and counseling as needed.
  • Supervises and evaluates personnel, holding them accountable to written performance standards.  Counsels personnel as needed.
  • Develops nursing goals and objectives, policies and procedures, and quality assurance measures.
  • Encourages continuous development for all staff to maintain and upgrade their skills and knowledge.
  • Promotes teamwork within departments.

Administrative

  • Acts on behalf of the administrator in his/her absence.
  • Participates in medication destruction per state regulations.
  • Supervises duties of the nursing staff, keeping daily work schedules and maintaining adequate staffing patterns.
  • Maintains current knowledge of state and federal regulations and oversees implementation of new requirements in areas of deficient practice.
  • Participates in activities of committees such as CQI/QAPI, Safety, Psychotropic Review, Continued Stay Review, Medicare Team, and/or appoints other nursing personnel to appropriate committees.
  • Investigates allegations of abuse and sub-standard care, reports and manages correspondence with the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.
  • Utilizes services of outside consultants ie; nursing, pharmacy, and psychologists, to audit regulation compliance and guide improvement plans.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of all work related information according to HIPAA regulations.

Public Relations

  • Maintains cordial relations with neighbors, families, friends, as well as individuals and groups within the community.
  • Promotes effective working relations with administration, medical staff, affiliated agencies, volunteers, and other departments.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

  • RN currently licensed in the state of Colorado, BSN preferred.
  • 5 years supervisory experience in the long term care field preferred.
  • Education and training in the field of geriatrics.

  • Ability to work and converse in a polite manner with neighbors, their families, co-workers, and others associated with the position on a daily basis.

  • Must have good writing and communication skills.
  • Must be able to use initiative and judgment in maintaining assigned area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Must exhibit courteous, compassionate, and respectful treatment of neighbors, families, and co-workers.
  • Must display a positive attitude and flexibility in changing situations.

 

   Material and Equipment used:

  • Ability to perform basic computer functions and to learn new programs as used by the facility.
  • Equipment associated with nursing.

Working Environment/Physical Activities:

  • Must be able to stand and walk 5-7 hours a day.
  • On office days, must be able to sit up to 4-8 hours.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 0-50 pounds by self regularly and 50+ pounds occasionally with assistance.
  • Occasionally will lift neighbors with assistance.

Work Location:  This is not a remote position and work must be performed in-person.
