About the Department

Summary Objective

Consults with subject matter experts to develop highly effective, learner-focused instructional materials that promote successful retention of learning objectives. Creates classroom-based and e-learning modules and training materials. Works with instructors to produce detailed lesson plans, teaching materials, and submit curricula for approval to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC).

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities as needed.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Develops and edits inclusive and accessible learning materials for multiple delivery methods.

  • Analyzes, updates, and refines existing instructional content and training curricula, ensuring they meet or exceed standards set by the Academic Director, LMPD Executive Command, and regulatory agencies.

  • In conjunction with instructors/subject matter experts, designs standardized/evidence-based learning objectives, activities, assignments, content, and assessments.

  • Assists Academic Director with training & professional development needs

  • Coordinates curriculum submission to Kentucky Law Enforcement Council.

  • Applies project and relationship management skills to concurrently accomplish multiple instructional design projects effectively.

  • Assists with training record maintenance, including coordinating ongoing training needs/requirements with Command staff.

  • Provides continuous improvement support by regularly monitoring course learning outcomes.

  • Supports Learning Management System integration by updating, maintaining, and upgrading course content and delivery strategies to improve learner and instructor experiences.

  • Assists in troubleshooting e-learning issues reported by users.

  • Creates e-learning content, including audio and video resources, storyboards, scripts, and assessments.

  • Provides continued training to instructors, staff, and learners regarding use of LMPD Training Division’s learning technologies.

  • Remains current on best practices in instructional design.

  • Available onsite during regular Training Academy hours M-F 8AM-5PM.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, Education, English, Journalism, Human Resources, Social Science, Social Work, or a related field.
• Five (5) years of experience in teaching and writing training curricula for adult learners or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

POLICE

• Must not have been convicted of a felony.
• Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
• Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
• Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
• Must provide one's own source of transportation.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Must work a varied schedule.
• Must not have retired, resigned, or separated from employment with a law enforcement agency under investigation or due to pending or final disciplinary actions.

• Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.

• Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.

• Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

• Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
