About the Department

The purpose of the class is to provide accounting functions in conformance with generally accepted accounting principles.   The class is responsible for accounting, disbursement, maintenance, review, interpretation, analysis and reconciliation of accounts within assigned area of responsibility.  The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Position Duties

  • Performs accounting functions in accordance with Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and requirements for assigned accounts. 
  • Reconciles all funds and accounts for assigned areas of responsibility; researches discrepancies, collects information, and reports findings. 
  • Tracks payroll activity for all departments and related funds. 
  • Tracks fixed assets for General and Capital funds; inventories fixed assets. 
  • Posts payments, journal and general ledger entries as assigned. 
  • Prepares required financial reports such as worker’s compensation, pension, 941, element object reconciliation etc. 
  • Prepares audit documents, assists with or performs audits. 
  • Performs data entry of all financial activities for assigned accounts and funds; verifies and reconciles accuracy of data entered. 
  • Attends staff or project meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.   
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate of Science Degree (A.S.), Vocational Technical Degree, or specialized training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in accounting or a closely related field. 

Requires one year of work experience in accounting.

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

  • Language involves the ability to read, write, and speak. 
  • Read technical instructions, procedures manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composes routine and specialized reports, forms, and business letters; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.  
  • Mental ability involves analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the job and the presence of any unusual pressures present in the job.
  • Requires performing specialized technical and professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; requires application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
  • Guides others, making frequent decisions affecting the individual, coworkers, and others that depend on the service or product.
