CRNA Job Description

Job Title: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

Reports to: VP of Physician Services

Summary: CRNA has responsibility and accountability for assuring the delivery of quality anesthesia care for patients in accordance with individual patient needs, physicians orders, hospital and departmental policies, within a team-care model. This is an exempt position for independent contractors (1099). 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1.  Collaborates with the surgeon regarding the anesthesia plan.

  2. Participates in preoperative assessment and care of patients, including but not limited to assisting in the exam and assessment, obtaining informed consent, ordering/administering pre-medications, and requesting preoperative studies/labs.

  3. Ensures the availability and readiness of equipment, supplies, and medications to perform the planned anesthetic. Performs and documents insertion of invasive lines as needed (intravenous and arterial).

  4. Selects, obtains, and administers the necessary anesthetics and fluids needed to maintain homeostasis.

  5. Documents results for patient record, including all relevant assessment, care, and monitoring data.

  6. Remains in constant attendance of the patient until the responsibility of care is transferred to another qualified healthcare provider, in accordance with the transfer of care protocol. Participates in the postoperative recovery of patients as necessary, including management of fluids, pain, and ventilation.

  7. Performs and documents in the Hospital EMR postoperative assessments daily, as needed.

  8. Maintains confidentiality of all information accessed on the job.

  9. Utilizes appropriate Hospital resources as needed and in a cost-effective manner.

  10. Attend Peer Review and other meetings as required. 

Qualifications:

  1. Holds or will obtain Utah State License.

  2. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program.

  3. Is awaiting initial certification or is currently certified by the National Board of Certification or Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

  4. Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by Uintah Basin Medical Center.

  5. Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities of a CRNA.

  6. PALS and ACLS certification.

Skills and Experience:

  1. Knowledge of a wide variety of anesthetics and procedures, including spinal, intravenous, regional, and other techniques. Understands application of peripheral venous and radial arterial catheters. Stays current with new anesthesia trends.

  2. Knowledge of guidelines for collecting, disposing of, and working with contaminated or possibly infectious materials and specimens.

  3. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, and pharmacology.

Skills:

  1. Skill in administering anesthesia to a broad range of patients.

  2. Skill in performing a variety of anesthetic techniques proficiently.

  3. Knowledge and skill in educating patients, families, and staff about procedures.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively and participate collaboratively on the health care team.

  2. Ability to respond appropriately in emergencies, including the use of CPR if needed.

  3. Ability to recognize, evaluate, and solve problems and correct errors.

  4. Knowledge and ability to operate a wide range of anesthetic equipment and supplies.

  5. Ability to stand up six to ten hours per day/shift. 

  6. Ability to move up to 50 pounds of equipment and supplies.
