Overview:

Provides and manages direct patient care, infants through the geriatric population, in the Emergency Department.  Assures the adequacy and appropriateness of medical care provided to patients.  

Responsibilities:
  • Provides and manages direct patient care in the Emergency Department.
  • Treats a variety of disease processes and injuries; acute and chronic conditions, emergent and non-emergent.
  • Competent performing rapid patient assessment, emergency intervention and stabilization
  • Performs histories and physicals, including psycho-social issues.
  • Orders appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments.
  • Analyzes patient data and formulates diagnoses
  • Develops and implements patient treatment plans; evaluates these treatments plans and revises as necessary.
  • Prescribes drugs, regulated medical devices and treatment modalities as appropriate to the patient’s assessed medical condition.
  • Performs minor surgical procedures.
  • Provides education to patients and families regarding preventive health care, disease processes, potential medication side effects, nutrition, etc.
  • Consults and refers patients to other healthcare professionals, facilities as appropriate to provides for an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • May inoculate and vaccinate patients to immunize patients from communicable diseases.
  • Reports deaths, communicable disease to the appropriate local, state and federal health agencies.
  • Provides clinical supervision for Emergency Department staff: physicians, nurses, physician assistants, etc.
  • May supervise and teach students, residents and interns to Emergency Department specific procedures, techniques.
  • Participates in administrative decision making, establishes policies, procedures and guidelines designed to ensure the provision of adequate, comprehensive care.
  • Serves as a member of the organized medical staff, attends medical staff meetings and hospital committee meetings as requested; adheres to the medical staff bylaws and rules and regulations.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of educational programs in the Emergency Department for staff and the community
  • Understands and is in compliance with the Emergency Department’s policies and procedures for safety, infection control, hazardous materials and waste, etc.
  • Available for consultation for Emergency Department staff.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Participates in various research studies in Emergency Medicine.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Medical Director, Emergency Department staff.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Attends medical staff meetings and committee meetings as requested.
  • Stays current with new developments in emergency medicine through continuing education, conferences and affiliations with professional societies.

 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduate of a medical school accredited by the Council on Medical Education.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program.          

Experience:

  • None

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Licensed by the New York State Department of Education.
  • Current Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM) only.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration Registration.
  • Presentation of Certificate of Insurance.
  • Current BCLS, ACLS and PALS certifications

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to fully utilize IMC's electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
