The director holds the accountability to manage within the context of the areas of responsibility, and to transform organizational values into daily operations yielding an efficient, effective, and caring service.
The director holds and exercises the authority to fulfill the responsibilities of the profession, healthcare team, consumers of nursing services, and the service area. This authority is exercised across the nursing delivery system and across the continuum of care within the service area.
Serving as a catalyst and role model, the director provides leadership and direction in accordance with the organization’s mission and values and nursing’s philosophy. The director collaborates with other professional disciplines to achieve service area goals. The director is a partner with other directors, medical providers, and other interdisciplinary leaders to oversee practice and operations within the specified service area.
The director ensures the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, programs, and services that are evidence-based and consistent with professional standards and values. The director is accountable for measurement, assessment, and improvement in nurse-sensitive patient and service outcomes, as well as the assurance of a professional nursing practice environment in which registered nurses are autonomous, govern their practice, and are empowered to provide effective, efficient, safe, and compassionate quality care. The practice environment is a critical factor in the recruitment and retention of registered nurses. The director is accountable to ensure the competence of registered nurses and their ongoing professional growth and development. It is the responsibility of the director to create a work environment that facilitates and encourages involvement of the staff in decision-making processes. In this way, the nurse closest to the patients served may make appropriate decisions about care. Creating such an environment may require an adjustment of personal leadership style. Communication mechanisms should be in place to facilitate both sending and receiving information. The integration of the decision-making process, the leadership style, and the communication mechanisms are critical to the accomplishment of the service area’s primary goal, this is to provide nursing care to patients.
The director collaborates in the service area delivery system and process design. Integral components of the delivery system and process design include: the physical work environment (e.g. injury prevention), use of technology applications (i.e. electronic medical record), nursing workload measurement based on patient need for nursing care, clinical and financial models, data collection and analysis, outcome identification and measurement, practice innovations, and recruitment and retention initiatives. Directors ensure the establishment and implantation of standard of nursing practice consistent with standards of professional organizations and regulatory agencies. Directors provide leadership in professional, community, legislative initiatives to shape the future of nursing, health policy, and societal health.
