Overview:

The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for the position of Research Assistant. The position will report to the Curator of Provenance to assist with in-depth research regarding onboarding a large bequest of objects primarily from the Ancient Americas. This position is temporary.

With a collecting history that extends back to 1755, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the leading university art museums in the country, with collections that have grown to include more than 117,000 works of art ranging from ancient to contemporary art and spanning the globe. Committed to advancing Princeton’s teaching and research missions, the Art Museum also serves as a gateway to the University for visitors worldwide. As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building scheduled to open in Fall 2025, the Art Museum presents three exhibitions in its downtown venue Art@Bainbridge. When the new building opens, the Art Museum will open with 32 galleries and initiate its new exhibitions program with seven annual exhibitions onsite and on tour.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with researching and composing provenance statements for the 2,000+ objects and facilitating their publication on the Museum’s website;
  • Support the Curator of Provenance with public posting of the acquisition of ancient and archeological material as required by relevant professional organization(s);
  • Help align the acquisition with overall cultural heritage and ethical stewardship guidelines and priorities within the Museum;
  • Help field research requests relating to the relevant objects.
Qualifications:

Essential Requirements

  • M.A. in Art History or Museum Studies.
  • Prior employment or internship experience with provenance research in a museum or art market context.
  • Interest in cultural patrimony and heritage issues.

Preferred Requirements

  • Some familiarity with the history of art and archeology in the field of the Ancient Americas.
  • Reading knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
