The City of Pasadena department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services is seeking a seasoned Senior Lifeguard to join the Aquatics team! The Senior Lifeguard will work at the newly constructed John J. Kennedy Pool located at Robinson Park Recreation Center and assists with Aquatics Programming year-round.
 
The ideal candidate will be dependable and able to facilitate swimming lessons and water exercise classes for customers of all ages. This person must also be Red Cross certified in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid, and be an adept swimmer. To be successful in this position, individuals must be able to work in a team setting, focus on safety, and be attentive to the needs of the customer.

CERTIFICATIONS
All certifications MUST be attached to the application at the time of submission to participate in the examination process. Failure to attached required certifications will results in disqualification. 

WORK SCHEDULE
This is a part-time position working up to 19 hours per week. Facility hours (non-summer) are Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm or 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Summer Facility hours anytime between the hours 6:30am – 10:00pm Monday through Sunday.

SWIM TEST DATE September 20, 2025 at 11:00am (tentative date)

Location: Honorable John J. Kennedy Pool 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave.

*A swim test taken with the City of Pasadena within the last six months is valid.

Position Duties

Below is a list of major responsibilities which may be required of this position. For more detailed information, please review the Senior Lifeguard job description.

  • Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor or designee, may coordinate, supervise, and instruct activities at a community swimming pool according to assignment.
  • Ensures adherence to water safety rules and practices and responds to participants in danger by performing water rescues and administering first aid; participates in pool maintenance.
  • Conducts swimming lessons for patrons.
  • Teaches water exercise classes. 
  • Acts as lifeguard and supervises other pool lifeguards.
  • Assists the Aquatics Supervisor/Pool Manager in the operation of a swimming pool facility.
  • Acts as the manager in the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor/Pool Manager. 
  • Organizes and coaches water sports.
  • Performs related classes and duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • Required American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, Water Safety Instructor
  • Must have the ability to swim 500 yards in 10 minutes, 30 seconds.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, timed swim test, interview panel, and/or department-level interviews.

There is currently one part-time vacancy in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill these vacancies and similar vacancies in the future.

Other Qualifications

  • All candidates are required to maintain current certifications as a condition of employment and are required to participate in and successfully complete Title 22 First Aid Certification after employment.

  • The City of Pasadena requires a pre-employment drug test consistent with current state and federal law. Candidates are required to successfully complete medical examinations including drug screen and a criminal background live scan screen.

  • Physical strength and agility to lift up to 75 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 75 lbs.
