About the Department

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
This recruitment will remain open until 100 applications are received or until September 21, 2025 whichever occurs first.

The City of Pomona invites you to begin your career in recreation and community service. Through the Youth Employment Program, you will gain valuable work experience while contributing to programs that provide healthy, engaging, and educational opportunities for the community. This is an excellent entry point for individuals looking to build professional skills and make a meaningful impact in their city.

Multiple vacancies exist through the Youth Employment Program. Examples of assignments include assisting with after school programs, teen programming, senior programs, summer programming, sports, the library, special events (i.e. holiday events or movie nights), and homework assistance/tutoring to name a few. 

Schedules vary based on program needs and will work approximately 10 hours per week. Some assignments will begin during the school year, while others will focus on summer. Training for various assignments will be held as needed. Any shift assignments and training taking place during the school year will occur during after school hours and on weekends. Summer shifts may include morning, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts. Hours and assignments are based on program needs and funding availability.

 

The Youth Employment Program is a temporary, seasonal at-will position scheduled to conclude on May 18, 2026, with the possibility of extension based on work performance, departmental discretion, availability of funding, and programmatic needs.


Youth Employees may be assigned to a number of areas including:

  • Teen Programs

  • Outdoor & Active Program (Sports) 

  • After School / Camp Programs 

  • Senior Programs 

  • Special Events 

  • Communications 

  • Pomona Public Library

Position Duties

  • Must reside in Pomona.

  • Must be between the ages of 14 to 19 years of age.

  • Must possess a work permit through the student's school upon employment.
  • Must complete an official online City application.
  • Must be available to complete required trainings to ensure successful performance of all duties.

Qualifications: Eligible applicants may be invited to interview to determine job placement. If no previous work experience, please provide any volunteer experience, schoolwork programs, activities, and/or special interests.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Support City staff in planning, developing, and supervising Recreation programs and activities.  
  • Support group activities and programs such as indoor/outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, special events, day excursions and other related activities  
  • Respond to the public; redirect inquiries to City staff when appropriate, give information pertaining to programs that are offered.  
  • Support in preparing sports and other equipment used at recreation sites.  
  • Support a safe program environment for participants. 
  • Complete required trainings.
  • Support in maintaining a space that is welcoming and conducive to youth activities. 
  • Assist staff in youth recruitment, enrollment, program outreach, attendance maintenance/monitoring and tracking. 
  • Assist participants and other recreation staff in routine and emergency situations, including reporting incidents to adult staff. 
  • Support in documenting incidents/accidents and ensure proper communication to all parties as appropriate. 
  • Communicate in a positive and effective manner with all participants, City officials, parents, volunteers, community members and co-workers. 
  • Maintain professional demeanor at all times to ensure the City's image and mission statement are upheld. 
  • Support in all areas of recreation/Outdoor & Active/ special event and parks as needed.  
  • Support with Division and Citywide events. 
  • This position may perform other related duties as assigned that may not be listed.
