We are the largest employer in the greater Hamilton region, and play a vital role in training the next generation of health professionals in collaboration with our academic partners, including McMaster University and Mohawk College. We also provide specialized, advanced care to people from across the province.
Located at St. Peter’s Hospital, the Behavioral Health Program is a specialized service for adults who have a diagnosis of dementia and exhibit challenging behaviors. These behaviors may include verbally or physically responsive behaviors in relation to exit seeking, wandering, activities of daily living and social interaction. All admissions occur with the goal of discharge to a lower level of care. Admission can occur from home or another hospital. Admissions from Long Term Care (LTC) are for a 60 day assessment and treatment period with expected return to the bed held in LTC. Consultation with LTC staff occurs to ensure continuity of care when the person returns.
Our Behavioural Health Program nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of this interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse provides patient care in accordance with the standards of The College of Nurses of Ontario, nursing standards and policies/procedures at St. Peter's Hospital and current Gerontological Nursing Practice. Reporting to the Clinical Manager or delegate, the Registered Practical Nurse provides nursing care under the direction of and in collaboration with the RN and/or Case Manager.
