We are currently hiring for a Shipper Packer to join our team in Ottawa. This position in on-site working a team environment. Your day to day will include:
Shipping & Packaging
- Prepare and package outgoing shipments, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and cost-effective methods.
- Provide weights and measures to customs and traffic; generate required documentation (waybills, barcodes, RFID labels, etc.).
- Review and interpret packaging specifications; fabricate boxes, barrier bags, or crates as needed.
Logistics & Transportation
- Select, track, and prepare items for shipment in the ERP system (including issuing serial numbers).
- Coordinate with carriers to arrange transportation.
- Load/unload trucks, move goods with forklifts, pallet lifters, or company vehicles.
Inventory & Quality Control
- Maintain accuracy of finished goods area; ensure items are not removed without proper documentation.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies in shipping instructions or inventory.
- Perform cycle counts of finished goods inventory.
Teamwork & Process Improvement
- Provide training and guidance to junior shipping staff when required.
- Work closely with supervisors and team members to meet shipping priorities.
- Contribute ideas to improve shipping and packaging processes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Equivalent to a Grade 12 level of education at a secondary school.
- Requires over 2 years, up to and including 3 years of relevant experience in a shipping/warehouse environment, including knowledge of an ERP system.
- Valid provincial driver’s license and forklift operator’s license.
- Basic computer skills to efficiently enter locate and retrieve data and/or documentation.
- Crane Training
- Uses initiative to: prepare for shipping requirements from initiators e.g. buyers, ensuring appropriate packaging is ready for quick response; learn new shipper/packer processes.
- Communicates effectively (verbal/written)
- Contributes ideas to improve processes.
Effort and Working Environment
- Daily labour including extensive movement of materials for continuous periods of time, climbing (ladders), standing, stooping and lifting/carrying of considerable amounts weight.
- Required at times to handle/push carts containing equipment and units (>50lbs).
- Some eye/hand coordination for moderate periods of time e.g. cutting tools, counting. Moderate periods of visual attention for data entry.
- Works with heavy equipment and tools daily. Some exposure to dust/dirt and disagreeable weather conditions (loading docks, driving truck).
- As part of the interview process, candidates may be required to complete a physical assessment to ensure they can safely perform the essential duties of the role (e.g., lifting, carrying, and operating equipment).
It is a requirement that General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada be registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods program and that all of its workforce be security assessed. Successful applicants must meet all applicable security requirements, including but not limited to the ability to obtain and maintain a Canadian government security clearance. Applicants may be required to meet additional security requirements in order to gain access to technical data, classified areas or information that is subject to international regulations. You must be eligible to work in Canada.
