Work Schedule:  Monday through Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm., with occasional evening or weekend work as needed.


The City of Greensboro is seeking a skilled and motivated Assistant City Attorney to provide high-level legal support across a wide range of municipal matters. This role offers the opportunity to handle complex and sensitive cases, provide counsel to city departments, and contribute to policies and practices that directly impact our community.

About the Role:

The Assistant City Attorney will:

  • Perform legal research and prepare various legal documents.
  • Handle multiple assignments, projects, and cases of a complex and sensitive nature simultaneously.
  • Provide legal advice and draft opinions, briefs, and pleadings.
  • Draft language for proposed policies, ordinances, and resolutions.
  • Advise City staff and officials on state and federal constitutional, statutory, and municipal law matters.
  • Review contracts, agreements, and policies for legal compliance.
  • Interpret judicial procedures and rules of evidence to guide city operations.
  • Provide counsel on employment law and other specialized legal areas as assigned.


In this position, you must have knowledge of constitutional law, municipal law, employment law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.  Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. And the ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities, and maintain effective working relationships with staff, attorneys, officials, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

What You Bring:

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Juris Doctor (JD), PhD, EdD, or equivalent advanced degree.
    • 4 to 6 years of related legal experience.
    • North Carolina law license in good standing.


Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience practicing in a municipal, governmental, or public sector legal environment.
    • Experience drafting language for proposed policies, ordinances, and resolutions.
    • Prior experience advising on complex employment law matters.
    • Experience presenting legal matters to governing bodies, boards, or commissions.
    • Experience explaining complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences.
