This position works alongside a crew to maintain and repair critical infrastructure, helping ensure Oakdale is a great place to work and live.
We are in the process of building a new Public Works Maintenance facility which is anticipated to be completed by late 2025. Oakdale offers a comprehensive compensation package including competitive wages, generous PTO, and a full benefits and insurance program.

Position Duties
POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs duties that result in or contribute to the comfort, convenience, or safety within the City of Oakdale by ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the City’s street and storm sewer facilities. Primary job responsibilities include snow and ice removal, pavement management and repair, surface water maintenance, including catch basin maintenance, pipe, culvert replacement/repair, sediment and erosion control, and safe operation of a variety of equipment. As a member of the Public Works department, our maintenance staff provides assistance to all divisions as needed, appropriate, or directed with general orders for assignments designated by supervisors, transmitted verbally, electronically, or in writing, with the position expected to work with a degree of autonomy in most areas of responsibility.
The Street Maintenance position plays a vital role in ensuring the operation and maintenance (including performing equipment operation, manual labor and general repair) of the City's essential infrastructure.
Successful candidates will have a knack for problem-solving and a commitment to public service. Candidates for this position must be available for extended workdays, callbacks and shift schedules as required for the City's maintenance operations.
JOB DUTIES OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Work collaboratively with other divisions to provide excellent and responsive public services, including daily maintenance, emergency situations, and special events
- On-site and field communication with residents on a variety of environmental and public infrastructure topics
- Proficient with standard technology
- Must possess good verbal skills, ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations; must be able to complete daily paperwork and timesheets, as well as daily progress reports
- Knowledge and understanding of natural resources, including landscape installation and maintenance
- Knowledge and understanding of turf ecosystem interrelationships, plant requirements, soil chemistry, and establishment
- Operate single and tandem-axle dump trucks, light trucks, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment safely and economically
- Operate mechanical equipment and attachments on trucks and other equipment such as hoists, pumps, winches, spreaders, snowplows, brooms, snow blowers, mowers, etc.
- Operate all heavy and specialized equipment, such as, but not limited to, street sweepers, end loaders, utility tractors, skid steers, mowers, asphalt crack sealers, rollers/compaction equipment, brush mowers, painting equipment, and related apparatus in a safe and efficient manner
- Must be able to work in heavy traffic while performing assigned tasks; must be able to direct traffic when necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians, motorists, and the work crew
- Perform minor service work on equipment such as refueling, lubricating, washing, vehicle inspection, and minor maintenance
- Repair and maintain asphalt and concrete; patch potholes, repair road surfaces, overlay failing roadways, and crack seal streets and bike trails
- Repair, replace, and install traffic signs according to MUTCD manual, apply pavement markings, and deploy proper traffic control devices to ensure the work zone is safe for workers and the public
- Assist in all aspects of Public Works maintenance activities within but not limited to the Parks, Street, Fleet, and Utility divisions
- Must be physically and mentally able to perform strenuous, stressful, and heavy manual duties during adverse weather conditions for up to 16 hours per day, 7 days per week.
- Must be able to work as a member of a small group performing maintenance tasks
- Respond to after-hours calls/inquiries as directed or needed during any calendar day
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.
Education
- High school diploma or GED certificate
Experience
- One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and operation of trucks and light equipment
Training, Certificates, and Licenses
- Within six months of hire, must obtain a Class B Commercial License with air brakes and tanker endorsement with Minnesota driving privileges

The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training preferred in order to exceptionally perform all of the functions of this position.
Education
- Additional degree/education in related street maintenance at a vocational school or related on-the-job experience
Experience
- One (1) year of experience in erosion control, surface water management, grounds maintenance, or underground utilities.
- Two (2) or more years of demonstrated experience in public works maintenance
Training, Certificates, and Licenses
- Class A commercial driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsement and Minnesota driving privileges
