About the Department

The Medical Laboratory Assistant, working under the oversight of the Medical Laboratory Manager and Medical Laboratory Supervisor, is responsible for performing a variety of routine and standardized medical laboratory tests using a variety of highly technical laboratory equipment. The tests being performed aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients being served by the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. This position performs and records quality controls for all diagnostic testing as well as for all laboratory equipment and may provide phlebotomy services, including venipuncture and fingersticks, to clients being served by the Department of Public Health.


Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.; with rotating Thursdays 8:00 a.m. - 8:p.m. Schedule will be adjusted accordingly to maintain a 40-hour work week.

Position Duties

Some knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory processing.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED and demonstrated ability to perform required tasks gained through one year of laboratory or closely related experience.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Other Qualifications

Performs venipuncture or capillary specimen collection for all FCDPH clinics.

Ensures all necessary equipment and supplies needed for phlebotomy services are stocked and organized.

Processes specimens making sure all are labeled correctly and have the correct requisition in the EMR.

Regularly communicates with clinic and laboratory staff on issues involving the phlebotomy area.

Documents all venipunctures on the Time of Draw log.

Washes and sterilizes all glassware used in laboratory testing.

Prepares specimens, media and reagents for lab tests and sample bottle for water testing.

Performs quality control of media prepared in the lab.

Performs routine GC tests from plate cultures

Performs related work as required.
