About the Department
Forsyth County's Department of Public Health is seeking a self-motivated and dedicated professional to join our team as a Senior Nutritionist for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. This dynamic position as a Sr. Nutritionist manages and implements the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) program, supervising peer counselors, determining nutritional eligibility, prescribing food packages, and certifying applicants. The Senior Nutritionist will also serve as the designated lactation professional for high-risk referrals and lead quality assurance efforts to ensure effective program delivery.
This role requires regular interaction with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as collaboration with a variety of professional disciplines.
The WIC Program is federally funded and renewed annually.
Clinic hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The clinic is open until 8:00 PM on Thursdays. Availability for occasional Thursday evening shifts is required; weekly hours will be adjusted accordingly to maintain a 40-hour workweek.
Employee will travel to training courses within the state at least every quarter and will travel to satellite clinics weekly. |
Position Duties
Ability to express ideas and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Considerable knowledge of principles of normal and therapeutic nutrition and health promotion.
Considerable knowledge and skill in nutrition and dietary assessment techniques (anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary), and in interpretation of data. Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for affecting behavior change.
Ability to write clear and concise entries using the protocol for progress notes in patient's medical records.
Ability to interview and provide counseling.
Ability to communicate with participants from different backgrounds, countries, gender and cultures, tactfully, courteously, sensitively, respectfully and effectively. Ability to work independently.
Ability to do data entry in an efficient manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, public health nutrition, or dietetics and at least two years of nutrition experience; or completion of a ADA approved dietetic internship with ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility preferred or master's degree in nutrition or public health nutrition with ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration eligibility preferred.
Must have a valid N.C. driver's license.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
WIC experience preferred.
Prefer the applicant to have a completion certificate from the North Carolina Lactation Educator Program or equivalent breastfeeding training.
Other Qualifications
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conduct a needs assessment to identify gaps in breastfeeding resources and services within the local agency and community that the WIC BFPC program can address.
Oversee the planning, management, implementation, and evaluation of local agency BFPC program activities and policies.
Assessing for nutritional risk criteria.
Scheduling appointments, help with measurements and finger sticks.
Counseling pregnant women, post-partum women, infants and children.
Teaching some classes, some breastfeeding counseling.
