GENERAL FUNCTION

The Active Older Adults (AOA) Coordinator at the YMCA will be responsible for creating, planning, and overseeing engaging programs and activities tailored to the needs of older adults within the community. This role will work to ensure that older adults have opportunities to stay active, build relationships, and improve their physical, emotional, and social well-being through a variety of wellness and social programs.


KNOW – HOW

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with older adults in a wellness, social, or recreational capacity preferred.
  • Knowledge of aging, health, wellness, and related issues affecting older adults.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with diverse populations.
  • Ability to adapt programs to meet the needs of participants with various abilities and interests.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and Emergency Procedures training required or must be obtained upon hire.
  • Enthusiastic, compassionate, and committed to supporting the well-being of older adults.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, plan, and implement a wide variety of wellness and social programs specifically designed for older adults, including health seminars, recreational activities, and social events.
  • Maintain strong relationships with participants, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for older adults of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Organize and oversee community outings, field trips, and special events, promoting engagement and socialization.
  • Promote and market AOA programs to increase awareness, participation, and attendance.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed in all programs and activities, maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
  • Foster a culture of community and belonging for older adults, encouraging social interaction and participation in YMCA events.
  • Work closely with other YMCA departments and community organizations to coordinate resources, outreach, and additional services for older adults.
  • Regularly evaluate program effectiveness through participant feedback and other metrics, making adjustments as necessary to meet the needs of the population.
  • Support the YMCA's mission, vision, and values in all aspects of the role.


EFFECT ON END RESULT

When the AOA Coordinator’s duties are fulfilled successfully, the YMCA will be viewed and respected as a community leader in adult programming. Participants will have an opportunity to reach their full potential and become more deeply connected to the organization. Therefore, successful fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  1. Increases in AOA program participation.
  2. Participants become volunteers and donors. 
  3. Expanding programming to incorporate off-site partnerships.
  4. Make a meaningful impact by helping older adults lead active, healthier lives.
  5. Work in a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive environment.
