The Counselor/Academic provides academic advising, guidance, and holistic support to undergraduate students to promote academic achievement, persistence, and graduation. This role assists students in course selection, career exploration, and personal development, while also connecting them to university resources for academic and personal success. 

Responsibilities

  • Advise students on course selection, degree planning, and academic policies.
  • Assist students with registration, scheduling conflicts, and progression toward graduation requirements.
  • Interpret institutional policies, procedures, and curriculum requirements for students.
  • Provide academic counseling on study skills, time management, and strategies for success.
  • Counsel students regarding personal and social challenges impacting academic performance.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources such as mental health counseling, career services, tutoring, or financial aid.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with FERPA and other applicable regulations.
  • Participate in orientation, retention, and persistence initiatives to support student transition and engagement.
  • Develop and deliver workshops on academic skills, career preparation, and student success topics.
  • Identify at-risk students and implement intervention strategies to promote persistence.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus departments to address barriers to student success.

 

Education

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student success programs.
  • Strong knowledge of student development theory, academic advising practices, and university policies.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
