Job Summary
The Grocery Assistant Department Manager helps oversee daily operations in the grocery department, including product selection, inventory management, pricing, stocking, and staff supervision. This position has direct reports. This role ensures that the department meets company standards for quality, cleanliness, and profitability while supporting Mackenthun's Exceptional Experience by providing exemplary customer service and by helping effectively train, motivate, and lead the team.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Management
- Assist with training and supervising grocery department staff.
- Provide ongoing coaching and development for staff.
- Monitor employee performance and provide feedback.
- Ensure staff adheres to safety standards and operational procedures.
- Work with other departments and assist with overall store management as needed.
Inventory Management
- Help monitor inventory levels to prevent stockouts and overstock.
- Assist with regular inventory audits and accurate product rotation (FIFO).
- Coordinate product ordering based on trends and customer demands.
- Ensure grocery products are stored and displayed per food safety regulations.
- Coordinate with suppliers for timely product delivery.
Customer Service & Engagement
- Address customer inquiries and resolve product-related issues.
- Gather customer feedback to identify product needs.
- Create promotional displays to drive sales.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with food safety standards and regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the department and storage areas.
- Ensure proper hygiene and safety protocols are followed by employees.
Financial Performance & Budgeting
- Assist in meeting the department’s budget and monitor sales, purchases, and labor.
- Support inventory control, pricing accuracy, and special order billing.
- Monitor product costs and collaborate with vendors for promotions.
Collaboration
- Coordinate special orders and communicate with customers as needed.
- Pre-book orders and ensure adequate product ordering.
- Serve as the point of contact when the Grocery Manager is off.
- Work collaboratively with other departments.
Department Development
- Stay updated on grocery trends and customer preferences.
- Train staff on new products and promotions.
- Conduct quality checks to ensure product freshness and quality.
Education & Experience
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Prior stock or grocery store/retail experience preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and perform tasks efficiently.
- Interest in food and enhancing the customer experience.
- Proficient in Windows and Google Workspace.
- Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Pushing/pulling up to 2750 lbs using a pallet jack.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and on terrazzo flooring.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals and noise.
- Ability to use equipment such as pallet jacks, ladders, and computers.
