Working under the daily supervision of the Traffic Operations Manager and the direction of the County Traffic Engineer, performs manual work in the fabrication, assembly, installation and repair of road, highway, traffic and information signs.
Position Duties
- Erects road signs in accordance with County and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards, repairs damaged road signs, make and repairs barricades.
- Conducts traffic control and signage inspections.
- Prepares and sets signage for special events, Temporary Traffic Control (TTC), and road closures.
- Operates a variety of handheld equipment and machinery in the installation of signage, e.g., power saw, sockets, drill, pole saw, chainsaw, ratchet.
- Operates a forklift.
- Operates a utility sign truck.
- Utilizes an iPad/computer and related software to create and close out work orders.
- Maintains and fills sandbags as needed.
- Participate in the County’s on-call program.
- Assist Markings Crew, as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma / GED and one year of working experience in traffic sign maintenance, construction, road maintenance, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver’s license.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, an FDOT approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Intermediate certification.
- Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, an IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I certification.
- Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, an OSHA forklift safety certification.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of proper placement and installation of traffic signage.
Knowledge of the proper placements of signage and barricades for road and lane closures.
Knowledge of safe work practices.
Ability to design a safe work zone.
Ability to use, maintain and inspect equipment and tools used.
Ability to complete and maintain accurate records as necessary.
Ability to navigate and use an electronic work order system.
Physical ability to meet requirements of the position - including, but not limited to - climbing, loading and unloading equipment, lifting and carrying.
Ability to work outside under inclement weather conditions.
Ability to operate an iPad and computer.
Ability to follow and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Ability to lift to 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work outdoors in adverse and extreme weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, electrical energy, and stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
