Youth Farm Crew bei YMCA of Kingston & Ulster County

Overview:

The Youth Farm Crew assists the Kingston YMCA Farm Project staff in community food production and food access by starting and maintaining our urban farm for food production in the spring, preparing seedlings for the Seedling Sales, assisting with and participating in education programs and/or events, engagement in community-based initiatives, participation in Conservation related programs, and
other farm duties as needed.

 

Who: City of Kingston youth enrolled in Kingston High School, ages 14-18 and in grades 9-12

Farm location: corner of Susan & Summer Streets, Kingston

 

Program dates: September 10 - October 24, 2025. 

 

Hourly pay rate: $15.50

 

What to expect:

• The Youth Farm Crew will take place after school hours, 2:30-5:30pm, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
• Farm crew members work on the farm, assist with the farm stand at the Y, engage with community members, prepare food with local chefs, learn about sustainable, urban agriculture and the food system, and engage in community-based initiatives.
• We will have Conservation based projects and field trips on Thursdays.
• We are an active vegetable farm - which means we work outside (weather permitting), interact with the soil, and encounter worms, bugs, and flying insects.
• We may take field trips to local points of interest and to visit community-based organizations or projects as well as local colleges.
• We participate in activities that give back to our community.

Responsibilities:

• Agree to, and abide by, the Youth Crew Expectations
• Assist in maintaining the farm during the spring, which includes weeding, watering, planting, seed starting and crop production.
• Assist with educational programs and events at the farm.
• Participate in Conservation and agriculture related education and training programs.
• There may be one or two weekend work sessions.
• Other farm related duties as they arise or are assigned.
• Represent the Y and the Kingston YMCA Farm Project

Qualifications:

• Be willing to learn and to try new things.
• Must be reliable.
• Enjoy working outside in all types of weather.
• Enjoy interacting with people (ex: teamwork, farm tours for visitors, for customer service at Seedling Sales or farm stands.)
• Have working papers.
• Be enrolled in Kingston High School, between the ages of 14-18 years old and in grades 9-12.
• Be willing to fully participate in the program (ex: engage with co-workers, commit to 3 days a week, be interested in our work)
• Must sign and abide by the Youth Farm Crew Expectations
