AFME is looking for a highly motivated individual financial services advocacy professional with a strong interest in the development of European capital markets.
Based in Brussels and active across the EU and UK, you will draw on your own understanding of capital markets and political acumen to contribute to AFME’s efforts to promote policy making which supports market development.
You will work closely with AFME policy experts and member firms to shape and convey our messages to policymakers and will have exposure to a wide range of legislative and regulatory files, official sector stakeholders, as well as other trade associations.
Key Responsibilities
- Working under the guidance of the Director, develop advocacy strategies and lead the association’s engagement with key officials in the EU and in the UK in the areas of his/her portfolio. This will cover various aspects of capital markets & banking regulation, with a focus on policies and developments related to financial market infrastructure, as well as other aspects of primary and secondary capital markets regulation.
- Depending on the evolution of the policy landscape and the organisation’s priorities, the postholder will also contribute to other financial services policy areas covered by AFME.
- Work together with policy teams to establish clear advocacy objectives, tailored positions as well as any supporting analysis necessary to effectively communicate AFME positions.
- Develop various advocacy material and activities (e.g. educational material, conferences, webinars, articles, etc), in cooperation with AFME’s communication and events teams where relevant.
- Build alliances with trade associations representing other market participants as well as the real economy.
- Ensure members and colleagues are kept abreast of relevant policy and legislative developments and their potential implications.
- Contribute to briefings for senior management and others as required, as well as team-wide responsibilities, such as the preparation, and follow up, of meetings of the European Public Policy Committee, the CEO report, the development of overall advocacy priorities and planning, etc.
- The role holder will also lead various cross-cutting workstreams, such as AFME’s work on regulatory simplification.
- As part of his/her portfolio, take responsibility for the coverage of stakeholders within certain Member States and/or European institutions., identifying and building relationships with key interlocutors.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- 3-5 years’ experience working on relevant financial service policy matters in the UK and/or EU, in a national/EU public authority, financial services firm, trade association or professional services firm
- Strong analytical and communication skills to be able to articulate clear and convincing advocacy argumentation and material. Excellent English drafting skills are required for the role.
- Well-developed project management and organisation skills to drive work streams and keep them on track.
- Ability to manage complex meetings/interactions with a range of stakeholders to establish and work towards agreed outputs.
- Proven ability to work across a wide range of policy issues and rapidly develop technical understanding of new areas.
- Solid knowledge of European decision-making and legislative processes.
- Highest professional integrity, strong self-motivation, and intellectual curiosity.
- Proven team player attitude, with an ability to network internally as well as with members and external stakeholders at senior level.
- Ability to function effectively and calmy in a challenging, fast-paced team environment
- Familiarity with current wholesale capital market policy issues in the EU/UK and/or other AFME core policy areas.
- Preference for candidates with a degree in Finance or Economics
- Understanding of the role of and organisation of financial markets infrastructure in Europe
- Experience of working within a matrix organisation
- Additional languages are an advantage
