POSITION SUMMARY:


The YMCA is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With a 150-year-old history, Greater Somerset County YMCA (GSCY) is a pillar of the community and has seven locations across three counties, which collectively serve upwards of 30,000 individuals. 


The Membership & Wellness Director takes a leading role in building relationships with members and program participants through effective customer service and directs all membership and wellness activities for the branch including recruitment of new members, retention of existing members and supervision of assigned staff. The Membership & Wellness Director is also responsible for providing oversite and direction to wellness/fitness center operations to include the management of chronic disease programming.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Implements membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Creates a member-first culture and models relationship-building skills. Fosters a climate of trust and respect that resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction. Analyzes processes, staff training, and member culture to evaluate and plan for growth.
  2. Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and  directs staff and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Prioritizes a “Say My Name” atmosphere that encourages friendliness and relationship building. 
  3. Promote program and membership enrollment through  innovative means to increase participation, brand recognition, and confidence in the YMCA’s services with existing and potential members. Coordinates program registration, including logistics to support phone, walk-in and web registration. Coordinates with marketing efforts to maximize  enrollments and provides ongoing support to Program Directors on related issues. 
  4. Develops and implements wellness programing and collaborates with other program directors to ensure members are offered high quality and innovative member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations, and on-going training of staff to assist with member retention.
  5. Engages members on new fitness classes, new equipment and other Wellness Center modifications, etc. 
  6. Develop the annual budget; manage and implement the approved budget for membership and wellness. Takes appropriate action to correct monthly variances. Evaluates membership trends, reports and is able to analyze data.
  7. Ensures proper implementation of welcome desk procedures. Reviews and updates desk procedures and communicates changes  to staff. Coordinates with the finance office as necessary on monetary transactions.
  8. Organizes membership events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the YMCA. Is available to participate in these events outside of normal business hours.      
  9. Leads assigned aspects of the annual campaign.
  10. Participates/leads in staff meetings and/or related meetings.
  11. Manage daily deposits, review daily cash reconciliation, follow-up on collections of returned drafts/returned  checks and audit petty cash.
  12. Staff Liaison for the Financial Assistance Committee.  Oversee the intake of applications, committee meetings, as well as administrative tracking of application approval and denials.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Three to five years of experience in a membership and fitness related environment. 
  3. Ability to administer and support fitness and group exercise programs.
  4. Possess superior leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with staff and interact with membership. Should have an entrepreneurial mindset. 
  5. Flexibility in work schedule and expectations to work evenings and weekends.
  6. Supervisory experience in a customer service preferred.
  7. Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
  8. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments
    of the community.
  9. Innovative problem solver who has the ability to work collaboratively with directors to achieve strategic goals.
