About the Department
Definition: Under direct supervision of the Roads Landscape Maintenance Supervisor, performs skilled maintenance and repair of roadside hardscape, landscape and irrigation facilities, as well as weed management. Performs roadside landscape maintenance tasks using various tools and equipment to clean, maintain, and repair landscaping and irrigation systems within public rights-of-way and roadways. Works in a variety of weather conditions while maintaining public safety and removing hazards. This position is treated as a FLSA non-exempt and considered a Driving position.
Distinguishing Features: The Roads Landscape Maintenance Worker II is the second level of the Roads Landscape Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the Roads Landscape Maintenance Worker I by requiring a higher skill level, greater experience, ability to work independently, and the requirement for a Certified Applicator License.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, ability, skill, and other characteristics. Position Duties
1. Performs skilled landscape maintenance activities for roadside hardscape, landscape, irrigation, and weed management within the Community. Performs various landscaping duties within the right of way such as trimming trees and shrubs, sweeping sidewalks, removing trash and debris, repairing irrigation systems, managing or removing weeds and applying herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides.
2. Safely operates a variety of landscape maintenance tools and equipment such as sprayers, sweepers, mowers, weed eaters, trimmers, chain saws, etc. Provides leadership and assistance to roads landscape maintenance workers in the proper use of equipment.
3. Using judgement, removes trees, vegetation and other hazards that affect the visibility of signage, vehicular sight visibility, clear zone, or block drainage structures.
4. Performs inspections of roadside hardscape, landscape and irrigation assets such as sidewalks, walls, decorative pavement, benches, plants, irrigation lines, controllers, etc. Clearly documents and reports any deficiencies.
5. Performs routine preventative maintenance and inspections of equipment. Conducts daily walk around inspection of equipment prior to use to ensure that it is operating safely and properly. Cleans and services equipment after use. Reports any mechanical or operational problems to the supervisor.
6. Determines and installs appropriate traffic control devices for work zones in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to ensure worker safety.
7. Acts as a lead worker by overseeing tasks in the field, manages work orders, and provides training and mentorship to roads landscape maintenance workers. Keeps supervisor informed of any problems or concerns with work crews, unsafe conditions, or other situations.
8. Performs other job-related duties and special assignments as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to weed control and landscaping within a right-of-way.
- Knowledge of traffic control principles within public rights-of-way.
- Knowledge of maintenance principles, concepts, methods, techniques, and practices for various types of roadside hardscape, landscape, and irrigation facilities.
- Knowledge of native plants on SRPMIC and proper practices for their care.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in landscape maintenance, including operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices and requirements.
- Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in landscape maintenance and repair.
- Skill in identifying and performing preventive maintenance needed on equipment operated.
- Skill in following oral and written instructions.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
- Skill in problem solving and evaluating work in progress for compliance with established standards.
- Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
- Ability to perform skilled tasks involving maintenance of roadside landscaping and irrigation facilities.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry equipment, tools, material, and other heavy objects (weighing 50 pounds or more) for long distances (more than 20 feet) and to otherwise physically perform and complete work related tasks.
- Ability to work for extended periods performing activities which require stooping, reaching, lifting, bending, and standing.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Ability to maintain detailed work logs and document time, materials, and equipment used to carry out work orders.
- Ability to interact and maintain an effective working relationship with vendors, staff and customers.
- Ability to work independently, in the absence of supervision, and lead other staff.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with supervisors, staff, and customers.
- Ability to understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions including work orders.
- Ability to use a personal computer to complete leave requests, training, and other basic tasks.
- Ability to obtain Certified Applicator License.
- Ability to obtain Arizona Certified Landscape Professional (ACLP) and ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT) certifications.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of two (2) years full-time work experience in the maintenance and repair of roadside hardscape, landscape and irrigation facilities, or a closely related field. Must possess a Certified Applicator License through the Arizona Department of Agriculture, Pest Management Division within six (6) months of the date of hire. Certified Irrigation Technician or Landscape Professional preferred.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

- Requires working after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License
