Utility Locator I - Asset Management
The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome a Utility Locator I to the Assest Management team! As a Utility Locator I, you will support the City of Colorado Springs’ Utility Locate Program, which is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking the location of all City-owned underground facilities to allow safe excavation and minimize damage and disruption of service. City-owned underground facilities include irrigation and stormwater, fiber, traffic signal power, electricity (normally limited to lighting or other Park features), and communications installations.

Job Type: Full-time; Non-Exempt
Work Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–3:00 PM. On-call every 5th week (Wednesday to Wednesday) with shift differential pay during on-call duty
Hourly Salary: $24.02 - $28.84

About the Team:
The Utility Locates Team protects underground assets that provide services to our parks, city buildings, stormwater infrastructure and traffic signals. These assets are extremely valuable and if damaged during construction, can negatively impact service delivery and increase costs.

Our Utility Locators are responsible for protecting over 141,000 underground assets underneath the City’s 6,165 lane miles of roadway, public and private property, right of ways and parks.

As an Utility Locator I, you will:
  • Maintain and update records
  • Read and interpret maps and construction drawings to accurately mark utility lines
  • Create charts and drawings to display various utility lines using GIS or other specialized computer software
  • Submit map updates as necessary
  • Complete marks and locate requests to facilitate safe excavation during construction activities
  • Respond to customer complaints
  • Interact with contractors, coworkers, the general public, and other outside agencies to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to coordinate the location of utility lines
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with customers and contractors
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations
  • Attend guided training online or with team members to advance skill level with locate techniques and best practices
  • Compliance reviews will be conducted onsite for locate techniques 
  • Complete locate requests to facilitate safe excavation

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • GIS software
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Position Duties

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED)
  • One year of full-time, professional experience in locating, maintenance or a related field
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
