About the Department

Under general supervision, a Fire Engineer drives and operates fire apparatus, responds to rescue calls; administers emergency medical care; performs firefighting duties, including combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. Performs other related work as required.
48/96 Shift Work is required.

Position Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
- Drives and operates fire apparatus in emergency situations in compliance with local, state and federal laws and nationally recognized standards.
- Respond to rescue calls; administers emergency medical care.
- Responds to fire alarms; removes persons from danger; lays and connects fire hose lines; uses chemical extinguisher, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment; raising, lowering, and climbing ladders; ventilates building to release heat and smoke; places salvage covers to prevent water damages and to prevent the fires from rekindling; operates fire equipment and pumps.
- Inspects buildings, schools, and places of public assembly for fire hazards and fire code violations; recommends corrective action.
- Cleans and inspects equipment; lubricates, makes adjustments, and repairs to equipment; maintains fuel and oil supply; cleans and tests fire hoses.
- Inspects fire hydrants, clearing weeds and brush; paints hydrants and fire alarm boxes; cleans and maintains assigned part of fire house and grounds.
- Participates in fire prevention training, including fire drills, classes in fire suppression techniques, and first aid..
- May supervise a shift in the absence of a Captain.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, methods and techniques of modern fire suppression including use of the Incident Command System; the operation, use and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment; rescue techniques necessary to respond to medical emergencies; basic firefighting principles and techniques; first aid (BLS) and CPR techniques; and emergency mitigation techniques for hazardous materials incidents.
Ability to:
Drive and operate fire apparatus; administer emergency medical care; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, and strength; climb ladders and work at considerable heights; think and act quickly in emergencies; understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately; learn and follow fire department rules, instructions, firefighting methods, and techniques; maintain standard and specialized fire fighting, rescue, and emergency medical equipment; exercise care in proper driving of departmental vehicles; interpret various ordinances, fire codes, and departmental rules regulating fire prevention and suppression systems.
Education and Experience:
Training and experience equivalent to 12 months as a full-time firefighter or (3) years of progressively responsible experience as a volunteer firefighter; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
Other Qualifications
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities including running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations, moving equipment and injured/deceased persons, climbing stairs/ladders, performing life-saving and rescue procedures, operating assigned equipment and vehicles; requires strenuous exertion under conditions involving fire, heat, smoke, and cramped surroundings; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observation and communicating with others
Disaster Service Workers:
All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.
Possession of Firefighter I certification.
Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate. Possession and maintenance of appropriate valid California Driver's License.
Successful applicants may be required to pass a comprehensive medical examination.
Must obtain EMT1-D certification within twelve months of employment.
Must obtain Driver/Operator 1-A, 1-B and Hazardous Materials Technician Certification prior to completion of probation.

Applicants need to supply a current CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certification within 6 months of hire.
