About the Department

Under general supervision, plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of several large groups of workers engaged in repairing, servicing, and maintaining automotive, construction, and other special purpose vehicles and equipment; determines and evaluates divisional needs and makes recommendations regarding methods of operation and purchase of equipment.

Position Duties

1.         Develops operating and maintenance policies, practices, and standards.
2.         Issues instructions to subordinate supervisors in maintenance procedures.
3.         Reviews work progress of subordinates.
4.         Inspects work in progress and upon completion.
5.         Determines work priorities.
6.         Ensures that necessary materials for repairs are obtained.
7.         Reviews requisitions prepared by subordinates for materials and supplies.
8.         Analyzes materials and labor requirements for maintenance projects.
9.         Prepares cost estimates.
10.     Evaluates and reports on performance of workers, equipment, and materials.
11.     Initiates or reviews disciplinary measures.
12.     Meets with representatives of labor organizations.
13.     Maintains records of maintenance activities.
14.     Assists in preparing divisional budget requests.
15.     Reviews records of division activities to determine the need for new or additional mechanical equipment and/or vehicles.
16.     Assists in the preparation of specifications for the purchase of new equipment.
17.     Meets with equipment vendors and arranges for demonstrations of new devices, materials, and equipment.
18.     Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of new vehicles and equipment.
19.     Oversees and reviews the assignment of equipment and operators to construction and maintenance sites.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or G.E.D. Completion of general mechanical maintenance or repair courses is preferred.
 
Five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment, construction machinery, and/or other special purpose equipment, at least three years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
