Position Overview: The Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective internal controls. This role provides leadership to the accounting team, supports executive management with financial insights, and helps guide the company’s financial strategy in alignment with the values of a family-owned insurance organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, premium accounting, and claims-related financial reporting.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and insurance industry regulations.
- Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
- Manage cash flow, investment accounting, and treasury functions.
- Prepare, review, and submit regulatory filings and compliance reports required by state insurance departments and other governing bodies.
- Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial policies.
- Coordinate and manage external audits, examinations, and tax filings.
- Partner with executive leadership to develop budgets, forecasts, and financial strategies that support company growth.
- Provide financial analysis and business insights to support decision-making across operations, underwriting, and claims.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to financial systems, processes, and reporting tools.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (CPA required; MBA preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Insurance industry or financial services experience preferred.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP, statutory accounting principles (SAP), and insurance regulatory requirements.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor and develop accounting staff.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems, as well as advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with executives, regulators, and cross-functional teams.
