Open Position: Long-Term Substitute Instructor - Science
Location: Upper Valley Career Center High School

General Job Description:
Upper Valley Career Center is in need of a Long-Term Substitute Science Instructor at our Main High School Campus. The position will begin October 3, 2025, and run approximately 6-8 weeks. The Long Term Substitute will fulfill responsibilities for the curriculum and students of the respective grades/subjects being taught in the absence of the regular instructor.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in alignment with the full-time instructor’s curricular plan
Provide student-centered feedback that supports learning and growth
Create a positive and supportive classroom environment
Communicate student progress with parents/guardians and relevant colleagues
Collaborate with other Science department staff to develop lesson plans, teaching strategies, curriculum, and student interventions
Possess awareness of current events and incorporate these events and themes into lessons to make them more relevant to students
Utilize technology to enhance student learning
Qualifications:
- Must have a valid teacher’s license or substitute license commensurate with the grade levels/subject areas being taught or be eligible to obtain proper licensure.
Able to effectively discipline students in a trustful manner.
Able to interact cooperatively with peers and supervisors in a manner conforming to the school philosophy.
Able to work in a collegial manner with coworkers.
Able to take on additional responsibilities in a spirit of cooperation and teamwork.
Able to maintain an atmosphere of trust, fairness, and respect and be mutually supportive with coworkers.
Able to maintain strict confidentiality.
Meets all mandated health screening requirements.
Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment. Able to successfully pass a BCI/FBI background check.
Maintains compliance with drug-free workplace rules, Board policies, and other applicable procedures/guidelines.
Salary:
Appropriate placement to be determined by education and experience. Days 1-60 will be paid at the regular substitute rate of $120.00/day, plus bonus. On day 61 of continuous employment, the employee will be moved to the appropriate salary schedule based on education. The employee will be granted a one-year contract.
Other Benefits:
State Teachers Retirement System, Worker’s Compensation, and tax-sheltered retirement contributions. On the 61 day of continuous employment, would become eligible for paid sick/personal leave, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Some benefits are a shared cost between the employee and the Board of Education.
Performance Evaluation:
Job performance is evaluated according to policy provisions and contractual agreements adopted by the Upper Valley Career Center.
