About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Manager to help shape and prosecute the goals of the Integrated Research Operations (IRO) group. This pivotal role will coordinate the cross-functional alignment of Discovery Research functions, ensuring the successful execution of R&D priorities across multiple teams, including Protein Sciences, Biology, Therapeutic Assay Sciences, and Computational Protein Generation. They will provide additional support to R&D functions by fostering close partnerships with Digital, Data Science, Automation Engineering, and Applied AI groups. In this high visibility role, the Senior Manager will leverage their operational clarity to inform strategic resourcing decisions at multiple levels of the organization, including functional group leads, department heads, and senior leadership.

As Senior Manager, you are a scientifically trained problem-solver who is skilled at translating complex discovery strategies into simple, measurable, and repeatable operational workflows. Bringing a strong background in biologics drug-discovery and a process-oriented mindset, you will run alignment forums, streamline cross-functional information sharing, and manage outsourced DNA & protein production logistics. You will synthesize insights from operational data and apply your excellent communication skills to co-author reports and presentations on the health of key platform technologies and overall execution efficacy. You will drive clarity and change management to ensure successful onboarding of new technologies into production. You will work closely with technology teams and Technical Program Managers to draft, adjust, execute technology onboarding roadmaps. Success means information and work flows seamlessly through the platform, cycle times remain predictable, and lab scientists stay focused on science.

Here's how you will contribute:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Cross-Functional Alignment:
    • Implement lightweight communication processes and tools to simplify cross-functional information flow, without adding complexity or bureaucracy.
    • Synthesize insights and recommendations from both KPI snapshots and professional partnerships that drive continuous improvement of execution.
  2. Coordination of Protein Production & Screening Activities:
    • Translate strategic R&D prioritization into coordinated action across functional teams.
    • Own and run weekly / bi-weekly alignment meetings that coordinate scientific information sharing and sample handoff logistics within design-build-measure-analyze workflows.
  3. Outsourcing Management:
    • Manage outsourcing activities across Protein Sciences, including DNA and protein production.
    • Work closely with external partners and vendors to ensure the efficient, cost-effective, and timely delivery of outsourced services.
    • Track outsourcing budgets in coordination with Finance and program teams.
  4. Technology Onboarding & Integration:
    • Partner with Technical Program Managers to draft, adjust, and monitor technology-onboarding roadmaps.
    • Drive change management that accelerates high-impact technology adoption while maintaining operational clarity within Discovery Research.
  5. Research Plan Support & Assay Funnel Management:
    • Leverage platform operation insights to support program teams in refining research plans and ensuring proper utilization of platform technologies.
    • Translate program goals and R&D strategies into recommendations for appropriate assay funnels and technology development.
  6. Collaboration with Digital/Informatics:
    • Proactively diagnose operational friction in digital tooling, clearly document requirements, and facilitate solutions that measurably improve user experience and efficiency.
    • Work with digital partners in curating a digital representation of our wet lab operations, facilitating a strong foundation for agentic AI applications.

The way you work:

  • Model a blend of scientific rigor and operational excellence in meetings and communications
  • Demonstrated ability to work across functions, regions, and cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Record of team-centric accomplishments
  • Embraces and demonstrates a diversity and inclusion mindset and role models these behaviors for the organization

The ideal Candidate will have:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent post-bachelor's experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in biotech/pharma setting
  • Experience in both early and late-stage protein production environments
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly understand and address complex scientific challenges that arise within research workflows and production environments
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, documentation and technical writing skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and evolving environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines

Additional Skills (Preferred):

  • Experience in R&D prioritization and strategic planning
  • Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or similar operational excellence frameworks

In this role, you would:

  • Work in dynamic, diverse, project-based teams
  • Collaborate across the company with machine learning engineers, drug discovery researchers, and bioinformatics data scientists
  • Actively contribute to the development of new technologies
  • Create and/or spearhead cross-functional initiatives that advance R&D goals
  • Serve as a partner and mentor to lab-based scientists

Working at Generate, you have access to world-leading technology platforms in the areas of:

  • ML-based therapeutic protein design
  • Advanced laboratory automation systems
  • Microfluidics for molecular and cell biology
  • High-throughput cell- and protein-based library generation and screening
  • Closed-loop machine learning/wet lab integration
  • Protein structure prediction and determination
