Tree Planting & Volunteer Coordinator
Nottingham City Council
Closing Date: 7th September 2025
Salary: £36,363 – £39,152 (Grade G) | Permanent | Full Time
Are you passionate about people and the planet? Do you love building community connections and have a talent for organising impactful events and green initiatives?
We’re looking for someone who can lead with purpose, connect with others, and make Nottingham greener, stronger, and more sustainable.
As our new Volunteer & Tree Planting Coordinator, you'll be at the heart of Nottingham’s award-winning Greenspace & Natural Environment team. You’ll help grow and support our brilliant Nottingham Green Guardians volunteer programme, help communities take pride in their local spaces, and drive forward the council’s tree planting ambitions.
This role blends people skills, project management, environmental passion, and community engagement into one meaningful, varied job where no two days are the same.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Working with an established team, coordinating the Nottingham Green Guardians programme: promoting opportunities, recruiting volunteers, running sessions and ensuring they’re valued, heard, and supported
- Leading and supporting hands-on volunteer activities in parks, open spaces and other green areas, from weeding and wildlife projects to tree planting and community clean-ups
- Organising tree planting projects across the city, identifying locations, liaising with councillors and partners, and making sure each tree planted follows the "right tree, right place" ethos
- Championing the work of volunteers and local groups through social media, newsletters, and celebration events
- Managing volunteer data and feedback, ensuring accurate records and safety documents are always in place
- Developing and delivering training sessions for volunteers and council colleagues on topics like health and safety, safeguarding, and volunteer leadership
- Applying for funding, collaborating with external organisations, and working across teams to grow what we do and reach new communities and organisations.
Who we’re looking for
- Has experience in managing, motivating and supporting volunteers, ideally in outdoor or community settings
- Is highly organised and can plan and deliver engaging events or volunteer activities and enjoys being out and about, not just behind a desk
- Has knowledge of tree planting projects or a strong interest in learning and delivering them at a city-wide scale
- Is highly organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines with confidence
- Is a great communicator, on email, social media, newsletters and in person, with a real knack for connecting with people of all backgrounds
- Understands health and safety and knows how to create welcoming, inclusive and well-managed volunteer environments
- Has experience working with community groups, external partners and funders, and can build and maintain strong working relationships
- Holds a full UK driving licence and is happy to travel around the city and occasionally beyond
- Some weekend and evening work is required
What you’ll gain
- A chance to help shape a greener and more inclusive Nottingham
- A role with visible impact in your local community
- Supportive colleagues and opportunities for professional development
- Flexible working and employee wellbeing support
- Generous local government pension and holiday scheme
