GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Accountant III performs accounting functions for various operations including retail, mission services, and transportation. This position provides narrative, statistical and analytical expertise for management, financial reporting, and acts responsibly with confidential matters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Journal entry and recording of transactions into the general ledger, including compiling and analysis of financial information.
- Perform general ledger account reconciliations.
- Prepare, record, and reconcile payroll expenses.
- Prepare grant claims with accuracy and maintain complete supporting documentation.
- Review and reconcile leases and Common Area Maintenance.
- Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions, and resolving discrepancies.
- Perform monthly bank account reconciliations.
- Assist with month end close, including preparation of journal entries.
- Maintain the general ledger and supporting subsystems including account analysis, monthly report preparation, cash reporting and control.
- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of assigned Finance Department functions including accounting, investments, corporate assets, credit, and collections.
- Assist with annual audit preparation with staff and designated auditing firm.
- Ensure compliance with all Goodwill policies, GAAP, CARF standards, applicable federal, state, county and private grant regulations, safety and security regulations, cash management policy and records retention.
- Maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate reporting.
- Serve as back-up for the Accounting Manager, as well as accounts receivable and accounts payable staff when needed.
- Assist the Accounting Manager with preparation of ad hoc reports, work papers, audit requests and third-party schedules as requested.
- Support special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of experience in an accounting role.
- Strong knowledge of fund accounting and related accounting software applications.
- Strong knowledge of real estate accounting.
- Working knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
- Proficient in operating PCs and navigating accounting software.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required, including VLOOKUP’s and pivot tables.
- Ability to perform all duties outlined in the job description, with or without reasonable accommodation.

This position is a full time, exempt position eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance; 403(b) retirement plan; Flex-Time Off.
WORK CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
- Field of work includes offices and in some instances the warehouse and surrounding grounds.
- Limited hazards due to visits to warehouses and surrounding areas.
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
- High adaptability required: Work environment usually hectic (fast-paced) with frequent short deadlines and regular instances of critical or unusual situations.
