DEFINITION: This position assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system.
REPORTS TO: The Gas Line Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
An incumbent in this position may be designated as GAS WORKER I or II, dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant.
$20.84-$31.26 per hour (Gas Worker I)
Position Duties
- Assists others in the installation of gas service lines and mains.
- Assists others in the repair of gas leaks.
- Assists with cleaning and restocking assigned vehicle(s) with appropriate tools, materials, equipment and supplies.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining a safe work zone.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in the installation of gas service lines and mains.
- Participates in the repair of gas leaks.
- Ensures assigned vehicle(s) are clean and stocked with appropriate tools, materials, equipment and supplies.
- Establishes and maintains a safe work zone.
- Completes required reports.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
GAS WORKER I
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- No experience requirements.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Required to satisfactorily develop job knowledge and skills to be promoted to Gas Worker II within 2 years of date of hire, which includes obtaining a valid North Carolina Class A CDL. Failure to satisfy this requirement will result in discharge from employment.
GAS WORKER II
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of and apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Drivers License or ability to readily obtain within 6 months.

GAS WORKER I
- Knowledge of the installation and repair of gas service lines and mains.
- Knowledge of job related safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of hand tools, test equipment, and small power tools.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with the work.
- Skill in operating various types of motorized construction equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system.
- Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
- Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
- Skill in setting priorities for completing projects.
- Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical duties. Working in inclement weather conditions and in confined spaces contributes to the complexity of the position. The need to work in the vicinity of other utilities and in heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas lines and mains. Success in this position contributes to the provision of natural gas utilities for system customers.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City staff and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to natural gas, working in a natural gas laden environment, noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as a full face respirator, masks, goggles, hearing protection, or gloves. Employment in this position requires successfully passing pre-employment testing and annual retesting of employee's ability to wear a full face respirator. Must be able to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and be on a rotating schedule to standby to be called in to work after normal working hours.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Gas Line Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
