General Description
The Vehicle Mechanic position includes journey level work in the maintenance, inspection and repair of gasoline and diesel driven automotive and small engine equipment in mechanical repair and maintenance. Duties include performing skilled tasks of automobiles, heavy duty trucks, tractors, other standard and special automotive equipment and small engines in accordance with standard trade practices for Port Everglades
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Special Certifications and Licenses Required
Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Seaport Business Purposes Credential for the duration of employment.
ASE Certifications may be required based on area of assignment.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
Preferences
4+ years' experience with small engine repair (i.e. lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers, diesel, unleaded, and 2 cycle)
Certified as an industrial Hydraulic Technician (Fluid Power Society)
ASE and NAEVT certification
Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Performs detailed maintenance and repair on equipment ranging from heavy duty tractors and trucks to vehicles and mowers in accordance with standard trade practices; performs unscheduled repairs such as troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems and replacing or repairing of essential parts in shop or at work site and occasionally after hours; performs maintenance and repairs of damaged and malfunctioning equipment; performs preventative maintenance including changing/adding fluids, inspecting brakes and belts, replacing filters, inspecting suspension, steering systems lights, and tires, etc.
Analyzes and locates defects in operation and road tests equipment before returning to service.
Performs tire service inspection and repair including mounting and balancing both light and heavy-duty off-road tires.
Maintains current shop manuals to determine type and specifications of parts needed; maintains inventory and records, requisitions parts and supplies and prepares inventory reports; keeps tools and equipment in clean operating condition.
Repairs and maintains alternative fuel systems, including propane-powered equipment.
Maintains parts procurement; research part numbers, vehicle application, serial number; searches for parts, finds best prices, and searches for vendors, dealers, etc.; orders parts online or by phone; purchases and picks up parts; files transmittals for payments made with credit card and any other documentation necessary for the division.
Perform off-site service or repairs for disabled or non-transportable vehicles or equipment; ensures proper performance during daily operations or emergency repairs.Prepare and manage work orders.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
