Description
The Managing Director of Development is the strategic fundraising and marketing leader of Waypoint, managing the advancement of donor engagement, strengthening community relationships, and expanding the agency’s visibility and impact. This role develops and implements comprehensive development strategies, oversees donor stewardship and communication efforts, and ensures diversified, sustainable revenue streams to support Waypoint’s mission and long-term success. In addition, this role is part of the management team, ensuring the strategic plan and funding sources support carrying out Waypoint’s mission. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Growth
- Oversee all fundraising functions, including individual and corporate giving, annual campaigns, and special events
- Develop and implement strategies to diversify funding streams and support long-term financial sustainability
- Partner with the CEO to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities, identify funding gaps, and meet revenue goals
Donor & Partner Engagement
- Cultivate and sustain strong relationships with donors, funders, and community partners through strategic engagement, stewardship, and transparent communication
- Lead donor cultivation and recognition efforts, ensuring a personalized and mission-driven donor experience
- Serve as a visible and passionate ambassador for Waypoint’s work, effectively communicating the agency’s impact, priorities, and funding needs
Supervision & Agency Leadership
- Supervise the Resource and Development & Marketing (RDM) team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture across fundraising, communication, outreach efforts and professional growth
- Guide the creation of compelling fundraising materials, messaging, and campaigns in coordination with the RDM team
- Work directly with Waypoint Leadership Teams to identify funding gaps and shortfalls to ensure resources meet the program needs
- Manage the Board of Advisors to ensure strategic alignment, active participation, and meaningful contribution to the organization’s mission and development and advocacy efforts
Collaboration & Strategic Partnerships
- Work closely with the CEO to engage major donors and cultivate long-term funding partnerships
- Represent Waypoint in community events and networking to elevate visibility and deepen stakeholder relationships
- Promote internal alignment by equipping all staff with tools, stories, and messaging that reflect Waypoint’s mission, values, and impact
General
- Complies with all Waypoint policies and Waypoint letter of employment
- Attends and participates in Waypoint departmental, interdepartmental and staff meetings as directed
- Accurately maintains necessary forms and records
- Maintains scheduled work hours and notifies immediate supervisor absences
- Attends training and works to increase skills in field
- Supports Waypoint events
- Performs all other duties as assigned by Waypoint

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Demonstrated leadership in nonprofit, human services, or mission-driven environments.
Proven success in donor engagement, cultivation, and stewardship across a range of funding sources.
Experience leading or collaborating on marketing and communications efforts, including campaign development, brand messaging, digital outreach, and content creation that supports fundraising and community awareness.
Strong relationship-building skills with internal teams and community stakeholders.
Experience in fundraising strategy, advocacy, and serving as a public-facing representative of an organization.
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree and substantial related experience.
10+ years of experience in development, including supervision and strategy.
Understanding of homelessness, housing instability, domestic violence, violence, and child care.
Familiarity with trauma-informed leadership and DEI frameworks.
