About the Department
Under an on-the-job training program with close supervision operates sewer cleaning, inspection, and maintenance equipment in the maintenance of sewers, utilities, and the building and grounds facilities of the City; performs related work as required. As the training progresses, supervision may by proportionately decreased and the responsibility of assignments increased. After completion of 2080 paid working hours, not including overtime, of on-the-job training, in the Water Service Center Division, the training step will be considered complete and the employee eligible for examination for promotion to Sewer System Maintainer.
Position Duties
- Operates a sewer jet, vacuum truck, power rodder, and bucket machine in the cleaning and maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers and catch basins and inlets.
- Operates a heavy-duty truck to transport equipment to and from work sites.
- Reads and interprets blueprints in locating and marking sewer or water infrastructure.
- Inspects the sanitary and storm sewer systems during cleaning operations and reports needed repairs.
- Operates sewer televising inspection equipment.
- Places and maintains pumps during emergency flooding situations.
- Services and makes minor repairs to equipment. May assist journeyman mechanic in the field or in the garage in the major repair and overhaul of sewer cleaning equipment.
- Performs installation of pipe lining/pipe patch.
- Prepares routine work records relative to work performed and equipment and manpower usage.
- May assist in the construction and repair of sanitary and storm sewer systems.
- May assist in snow removal operations.
- May be required to perform Water operator duties if necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education equivalent to completion of high school.
- Ability to learn the flow, functions, and operations of sanitary and storm sewers.
- Ability to learn and operate heavy sewer maintenance equipment in confined spaces in the presence of sewage and under adverse weather conditions.
- Mechanical aptitude to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to sewer maintenance equipment and to assist in major repair and overhaul of the equipment.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Ability to prepare routine work records.
- Ability to communicate with the public regarding sewer conditions.
- Ability to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one's self, others, and equipment.
- Ability to obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) within 30 days of date of hire.
- Ability to obtain a CDL A or B license within 90 days of date of hire.
- Ability to obtain an N endorsement within 90 days of date of hire.
- Progression in the training series to Senior Maintainer level is required to remain in the program. Must make continuous satisfactory progress in the training program including promotion to Maintainer within 2080 paid working hours to remain employed in the series. Operational knowledge and training progress will be assessed periodically by WSC supervision.
- Employee must successfully complete a 6-month probationary period.
- Willing to work overtime and standby as needed.
IMPORTANT-Failure to obtain the above requirements within the timelines could lead to termination of position.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
