General Statement of Job:  This position is responsible for processing all Emergency Room admissions for the hospital. The employee maintains the data integrity in the Mater Patient Index of the computer system.


Essential Functions: 

  • Assist patients, family members, physicians, visitors, vendors, and employees in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Support the hospital’s mission, vision, and values by presenting a positive and polite demeanor and offering assistance to all customers.

  • Register Emergency Room patients in compliance with EMTALA requirements.

  • Verify insurance coverage and obtain authorizations when necessary.

  • Obtain and verify patient demographic information; enter data accurately into the HMS system.

  • Perform Office Assistant duties as needed.

  • Complete admissions as directed by physician orders via ER or direct admissions.

  • Obtain admission authorizations when required by insurance carriers.

  • Register after-hours ancillary visits.

  • Ensure all required documents and information are scanned into patient accounts.

  • Collect co-pays, coinsurance, and balances due from ER patients at the time of service.

  • Provide written receipts for all payments received.

  • Verify ER registration accuracy and confirm insurance eligibility.

  • Update patient information provided by nursing staff into HMS patient accounts and logs.

  • Assist the Emergency Services Department as needed.

  • Explain patient responsibilities related to insurance plans, co-pays, and coinsurance.

  • Obtain all required patient consent signatures.

  • Advise Medicare patients and obtain signatures on the Important Message from Medicare form.

  • Maintain productivity records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

  • Monitor the fire panel, code blue panel, and blood bank panel; promptly notify hospital personnel of any abnormalities.

  • Attend and actively participate in monthly departmental staff meetings.

  • Review and sign off on the Communication Book daily in compliance with hospital requirements.

  • Attend mandatory departmental and hospital in-service training sessions.

  • Route patient complaints appropriately.

  • Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Apply hospital safety principles in all work practices; report identified safety risks or incidents as required.

  • Maintain current knowledge of insurance carrier requirements, corresponding insurance forms, state collection laws, and HIPAA regulations as they apply to admissions and registration.

  • Keep work area neat, orderly, and safe.

  • Follow infection control and employee health policies and procedures at all times.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital policies and procedures.

  • Perform emergency duties when required, which may include working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or responding to man-made or natural threats or disasters.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.


Experience:

Minimum of two (2) years experience preferred. Knowledgeable in Medicare compliance guidelines, Florida Medicaid and third-party insurance companies preferred.
