The State seeks an experienced investigative journalist to lead our statewide investigations and projects team, working with reporters in three South Carolina newsrooms.

 Applicants should be hungry to lead the kind of work that reveals what others want to hide, holds those in power to account, engages communities and drives change. They should have a track record of generating highly relevant project ideas and delivering ambitious multimedia storytelling and reporting..   

We’re looking for a creative collaborator who will lead a team of reporters at The State, The Island Packet in Hilton Head and the Myrtle Beach Sun News and engage with the wider newsroom staff on high-level accountability work. 

We’re looking for an experienced journalist who:  

  • Is determined to deliver ambitious investigative journalism that makes a difference, and has a track record of doing so  
  • Excels at leading teams to generate high-interest, high-impact ideas  
  • Consistently delivers bulletproof, camera-ready projects  
  • Understands when to engage the newsroom’s top reporters on breaking news, and when to protect them for deeper work  
  • Strikes a balance between quick-turn investigations and Capital P projects  
  • Appreciates the power of AI as an investigative tool and stays current on emerging technologies  
  • Communicates early and often with all newsroom stakeholders  
  • Is a leader who can bring the best out of veterans and emerging journalists alike, and have fun doing it  

Requirements:  

  • Substantial investigative experience and experience leading teams  
  • An understanding of digital publishing, online metrics and reader engagement, and how to use these tools to elevate projects and engagement  
  • Commitment to representing the diversity of our community in coverage and staff  
  • College degree or equivalent experience  
  • This position is based in Columbia, with hybrid flexibility to work both in the office and at home
