Responsibilities:

Elwyn seeks an On-the-Job Trainer (OJT) to provide hands-on training, modeling, and support to Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in residential homes. The OJT works directly in the program environments to ensure that DSPs are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform their duties effectively and in alignment with organizational standards and best practices. Training focuses on core competencies including supporting individuals with difficult behaviors, cooking and meal preparation, home management skills, and accurate documentation.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide side-by-side, hands-on interactive training to DSPs during active shifts to engage learners and ensure clear communication.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness by monitoring and assessing the impact of training programs through feedback mechanisms, performance metrics, and post-training evaluations, making necessary adjustments to optimize learning outcomes.
  • Model best practices including but not limited to the areas of:
    • Behavior support and de-escalation
    • Cooking, meal prep, and dietary planning
    • Cleaning, organizing, and maintaining a safe and functional home environment
    • Completing required documentation thoroughly and on time
  • Reinforce the implementation of behavior support plans, person-centered approaches, and daily routines.
  • Assess training needs by identifying skill gaps and training requirements through methods like observation, performance evaluations, surveys, and discussions with employees and management.
  • Develop Training Programs and Materials: Create engaging and effective training content, including lesson plans, presentations, handouts, and other instructional resources, tailored to various learning styles and objectives.
  • Facilitate training sessions for New Employees as needed.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship by offering personalized guidance, feedback, and support to employees throughout their training and development journey.
  • Work closely with department heads, managers, and subject matter experts to align training initiatives with organizational goals and ensure relevance.
  • Support onboarding of new hires by guiding them through day-to-day tasks and expectations.
  • Serve as a positive role model for professionalism, empathy, and strong work ethic.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide feedback on DSP performance and training effectiveness.
  • Keep accurate records of DSP training activities, employee progress, and program effectiveness. Ensure training materials are up-to-date and accessible.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree required, and minimum of 2 years’ experience in Human Services or related field, some supervisory or training experience preferred OR
  • High School diploma, or GED, and minimum of 4 years’ experience in Human Services, some supervisory or training experience preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a DSP or equivalent role in a residential setting.
  • Strong understanding of behavior support strategies, person-centered planning, and residential operations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Proven ability to coach and lead others with empathy, clarity, and professionalism.
  • Comfortable modeling hands-on tasks including cooking, cleaning, and documentation completion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adjust to changing needs in dynamic residential environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Must meet all background check and health screening requirements.
