Summary:

Responsible for working closely and assisting teachers, as well as other special

education staff with the delivery of quality education and support services for students, in an array of classroom settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the classroom teacher/staff with instructional activities outlined for students individualized educational programs (IEP's)
  • Must be able to implement, support and adjust academic programming as directed by administration or the classroom teacher
  • Participate in program planning to assist in the development of student instructional plans
  • Assist with the physical care of students, including lifting and daily living activities
  • Maintain program records, monitor student progress and reports as directed
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe, orderly and sanitary school environment for learning
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of students
  • A strong desire to work with students with special needs
  • Assist with proactive behavioral interventions to support students
  • Participate with teacher in ongoing development and improvement of classroom operations
  • Employee must have the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, public and other staff members
  • Employee must exhibit a positive attitude, creativity, independent thinking and be able to take initiative
  • Perform assignments in areas of general program operation
  • Attends required meetings to plan for students
  • Speak, hear, see and write clearly with or without assistive device(s)
  • Walk, stand for the full scheduled period, with minimal sitting options
  • Adhere to all Board and District policies
  • Regular, predictable and physical attendance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintains consistent, predictable and physical attendance to meet the requirements of the position

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or higher
  • Basic understanding, knowledge and ability to use current technology 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students 

Physical Requirements: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be physically present, regularly required to sit. 
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust, focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise students when the teacher is temporarily absent

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtract and multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
  • Ability to solve problems in a professional manner
