This Director, Risk Insurance and Risk Management, located in Los Angeles, CA, will be responsible for managing GCL’s comprehensive and global insurance and surety portfolio. This role entails managing the entire insurance and surety portfolio annual renewals, ensuring the health of our program with favorable loss ratios, and assessing and identifying exposure and risk that could impact our loss experience, impede the reputation, safety, security or financial success of the organization.

Location: Los Angeles, California (Open to remote locations) 

Job Type: Exempt

Work Schedule: Schedule fluctuates based on workloads during weekdays.  Rotation of on-call weekend responsibilities. Your availability to maintain scheduling flexibility is appreciated. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Managing the annual renewals of our global insurance portfolios and presenting those renewal proposals to executive leadership and senior staff. 
  • Overseeing claims and loss control activities. 
  • Managing of relationships with third party service providers including brokers, insurers and third-party adjusters. 
  • Leading the shipper’s interest cargo insurance program with a focus on internal sales support and training. 
  • Identifying exposures and recommending solutions to address these exposures. 
  • Implementing approved programs and promoting loss prevention activities. 
  • Establishing policies and procedures to identify and address risks in the organization’s services and departments.
  • Updating and monitoring compliance with insurance procedures. 
  • Conducting risk assessments, and collecting and analyzing documentation, statistics, reports, and market trends.
  • Reviewing and assessing risk management policies and protocols, in order to make recommendations and implement modifications and improvements.
  • Performing other duties as directed.

Qualifications: 

  • Thorough understanding of both property & casualty insurance coverages.
  • Excellent communication skills; written and verbal.
  • Solid interpersonal and customer skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with an attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle time-sensitive issues.
  • Excellent mathematical, and data analytical skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, with excellent Excel skills.
  • Flexible with possible overtime assignments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, international business. 
  • At least 7 to 10 years of related experience, preferred.
  • The following are preferred but not required:
    • Experience in transportation and logistics related insurance. 
    • Familiarity with surety bonds, ATA Carnets and cargo insurance. 
    • Insurance brokers license in resident state.
