Job Overview:
The Union Vegetation Management Technician plays a key role in maintaining utility rights-of-way (ROW) and access roads by performing herbicide applications and selective vegetation control. This role requires a strong focus on safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence in applying pesticides in proximity to energized utility infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely apply herbicides for vegetation control on utility ROWs, access roads, substations, and other designated sites.
- Prepare and mix herbicide treatments according to label instructions and site-specific prescriptions.
- Maintain accurate daily records including treatment location, acreage, weather conditions (e.g., wind speed), and product usage.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing pesticide application and storage.
- Operate and maintain spray equipment, including trucks, backpack sprayers, and other application tools.
- Identify target and non-target vegetation, invasive species, and apply treatments appropriately.
- Collaborate with crew leads and forepersons to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
- Maintain awareness and adhere to utility industry safety protocols, including FAC-003 and applicable OSHA standards.
- Regularly travel to remote worksites, including overnight stays (up to 25% of the time).
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Category J and/or Category E)
- Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, navigate rough terrain, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Strong attention to safety, detail, and environmental stewardship.
Preferred:
- 1+ year experience in herbicide application, weed control, or related vegetation management.
- Experience working near energized utility lines or high-voltage electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to chemical handling and environmental protection.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This position involves outdoor fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions. Technicians must be able to perform repetitive motion tasks, carry and operate spraying equipment, and wear all required PPE.
