About the Role:

The Inpatient Hospice Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in providing compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals receiving end-of-life services in an inpatient hospice setting. This position focuses on delivering physical and emotional support to patients and their families, ensuring comfort and dignity during a critical phase of life. The CNA will work every other weekend (along with working casually/as needed), collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams to monitor patient conditions and respond promptly to their needs. This role requires attentiveness, empathy, and the ability to perform clinical tasks efficiently while maintaining a calm and supportive environment. Ultimately, the CNA contributes significantly to enhancing the quality of life for hospice patients through skilled care and compassionate presence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in hospice or long-term care.
  • Ability to work every other weekend as scheduled.
  • Basic knowledge of patient care techniques and infection control standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in inpatient hospice or palliative care environments.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide emotional support to patients and families.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Additional training or coursework related to end-of-life care.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility support.
  • Monitor and document patients’ vital signs and report any changes or concerns to the nursing staff promptly.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, fostering a comforting environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of patient rooms and common areas in accordance with infection control protocols.
  • Collaborate with nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Assist with feeding and hydration as needed, ensuring patient comfort and nutritional needs are met.
  • Support the implementation of individualized care plans and hospice protocols during shifts.

Skills:

The CNA will utilize clinical skills daily to assist patients with personal care and monitor their health status, ensuring comfort and safety. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting compassionately with patients, families, and the healthcare team, facilitating clear and supportive exchanges. Time management and organizational skills help the CNA prioritize tasks during busy shifts, especially when responding to urgent patient needs. Knowledge of infection control and safety protocols is applied consistently to maintain a clean and secure environment. Preferred skills such as familiarity with EHR systems and specialized hospice care training enhance the CNA’s ability to document care accurately and provide tailored support to patients in their final stages of life.
