Position Overview
The Analytical Chemist will support material testing of lead acid battery components or other related items. Responsible for conducting mechanical, instrumentation/spectrometers, metallography, and chemical testing of a variety of materials and providing support to assigned projects and testing operations.
Area of Focus
Oversee daily operation of the lab and reporting on material test requests. Testing focus is on mechanical, chemical, metallurgical analysis, material testing on plastics, rubber, nonwoven components of battery materials.
Responsibilities
- Operating the laboratory instruments including instrument maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and other general laboratory support activities in compliance with corporate, safety and regulatory requirements.
- Determine the chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, and reactions of organic and inorganic compounds using spectrometry or wet chemistry techniques.
- Prioritize and address daily laboratory activities based on customer needs.
- Prepare samples, standards, test solutions, and reagents for conducting tests and advising and coordinating test procedures.
- Analyze, document and communicate test data in technical report format to appropriate end users.
- Budget and maintain inventory of lab supplies, chemicals, and gases required for daily operation of equipment.
- Prepare and validate standards and test procedures for processes, facilities, and tests.
- Perform a variety of special projects and related duties, as assigned.
- Provide audit support of lab function during external and internal company audits.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science/engineering or related fields
- Minimum of 3 years lab experience
- Background and knowledge in wet chemistry techniques.
- Hands-on experience with analytical laboratory instrumentation like spectrometers, methods, and standards related to material testing.
- Multitasking and prioritization of test requests.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills.
- Ability to handle 40-50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science/engineering or related fields
- Knowledge of and experience with OES, ICP, XRD, FTIR, DSC-TGA, BET instruments
- Membership in professional association related to chemistry and/or battery industry
